midas/red devil breeding for certain colours, gene help?

Allright.:)

So in regards to genetic inheritance, the way cichlids undergo a transformation to the colored morph (peeling) is vastly different than simple Mendelian genetics.

We describe the histological basis of color metamorphosis in the polychromatic Midas cichlid, Cichlasoma citrinellum. Eight percent of the individuals in a natural population transform from gray with black markings to orange, simultaneously losing their ability to adjust coloration in response to background and social context. This trait is inherited. Light- and electron microscopy revealed that this transformation is a two-step process. First, the melanophores die, then macrophage-like cells remove the debris. As a result of this initial process, the underlying xanthophores become visible, producing the orange coloration. A similar process may occur in individuals that further transform to white, or go directly from gray to white.

Look up scientific articles by George Barlow for a lot more info.

great!-) thanks very much.

I'm not selling my avatar midas, its the white and orange one!

This is one of the best looking Midas I've ever seen and Midas is my favorite fish, so I've seen and owned a few lol. His coloration is great! Where did you find him?

thanks mate, bought him from a lfs, he was 6-7inch and still barred... stayed barred until over 8inch, theres a whole thread on here about him if you search my name and barred midas, turned out he wasnt but im well happy wiyh him!-)

ime midas peel later than rd at over 4inch where as rd/midevils seem to peel at around 2inch's, anyone else found this????

ive also heard than some fish farms ad hormones to make them peel earlier in order to help them sell???

either way the female was bought as a midas from a trusted lfs and looks pretty tall bodied so im fairly confident she is midas, she didnt peel until over 4inch's aswell...

Would love to see you produce Midas with black splotches. Would hate to see you mix a rd in there to achieve it though. Too many midevils exist.

as wrote above im fairly sure she is a midas, can never be certain of course, my male looked very similar to her at that size?... as you see earlier in the thread i am in the process of aquiring that f2 female for him anyhow and she has the more typical midas shape and a nice hump for a female, she has layed eggs and the owner was hoping for a male thats why she's for sale!

there must be some on here who have bred different varients of midas and have some experience to share on the outcome of the fry? maybe??
