I have an empty 150 gal tank that I would like to have one Midas in. I have never kept this fish and would like to know a good place to purchase. I would love to have a male. The videos I have seen of a large male are awesome. I assume it is not possible to sex them at a young age. Any thoughts are appreciated. :D

Buy say, 4 of them, and the chances that one will develope into a male is pretty good.
Or maybe buy as many as you want, cause in that amount of space they can coexist for long enough for you to be able to definately sex one as male.
I feel like in a 150 gallon tank you can get more fish in than just a single Midas. but If thats what you want then good for you, it will work out very well in the long run.

Most people however keep a single Midas (or other large cichlid) in a 75g tank, so you have literally double that space for your guy.

will probly kill all others if hes the dominant fish but a midas with other fish isnt the hardest thing to get to work

tangledupincichlids.com aka Jeff Rapps. Great guy, good service, and is probably the #1 American cichlid distributor. He has a sub-forum here as well where you can ask questions. I am pondering getting a female for my male when I upgrade to a 300g+. The smaller you get the Midas, the better the chance you can get a community Midas. Here is a video of my 125g Midas tank to give you hope.;) 150g will be a good sized tank for your Midas.

Thats a first

If you get ababy midas and raise it with the tankmates I'm sure it will be fine as long as the other fish you keep it with arent trying to dominate the Midas. people say they should only be kept alon but these are the same people who only ever kept them alone and wonder why they kill other fish they introduce.

if you wanted it to tolerate tankmates it has to grow up with them.

Stunning fish!! Did you purchase him from Rapps? I was looking at his site and he lists juvies at 1" or females at 5" ... I may have to ask if he has larger males. I am not opposed to female, I just love the large hump the males get. On a side note, doesnt he dig up your plants?

Do you have any tankmate suggestions?
