Midas

Stunning fish!! Did you purchase him from Rapps? I was looking at his site and he lists juvies at 1" or females at 5" ... I may have to ask if he has larger males. I am not opposed to female, I just love the large hump the males get. On a side note, doesnt he dig up your plants?
I got his parents from Rapps, but wanted a Creamsickle like my old male in my Avatar. Decided to grow out a few from the parents and this guy outgrew most from his batch. by 4 months has was a third their size. I actually need to post a progression thread. Can you believe when he was 5-6" he was the same color pattern as xinchavoc's male?

I would order some of the 1" Midas, about 4-6. The younger they are, the more pride you have in the final outcome. I grew him up from an egg, so I can actually tell you how old he is to the day opposed to guessing. ;)

Almost forgot, he does accidently with the small grass that grows here and there. However he likes to swim through and rest in the plants at night especially the big one.

Thats awesome. I will have to call Rapps and see how much shipping is. Last time I bought from him it wa a LOT!! Not his fault I know ... I guess thats the price for living so far from quality products.

tangledupincichlids.com aka Jeff Rapps. Great guy, good service, and is probably the #1 American cichlid distributor. He has a sub-forum here as well where you can ask questions. I am pondering getting a female for my male when I upgrade to a 300g+. The smaller you get the Midas, the better the chance you can get a community Midas. Here is a video of my 125g Midas tank to give you hope.;) 150g will be a good sized tank for your Midas.

Wow, he looks very happy. You are soooo lucky to have such a calm midas.

I am looking at all my options. While I am waiting for Rapps to get back to me by email, I ran across Bluegrass Aquatics. Anyone know if they have good fish, customer service, etc.?

You want something that can take a good beating, but won't try to dominate the Midas.
For instance things like Convicts like to try and take on larger fish, so a male convict would probably end up being killed by the Midas.
Salvini might be good, tough but not too tough, maybe try something a little larger. I had some severums before that were pretty mean when defending themselves, but I can't speak for all severums.

I dont plan on adding any decorations in this tank. I have one large drift wood in the middle. Im guessing this limits the options, since there wont be anywhere for other fish to hide. I may consider a female to go with it, but I read the female will need adequate hiding spots. The bluegrass aquatics page sells them in pairs, but I have yet to see if that is a male/female pair, or if they are just selling two of them. Furthermore, I dont know anything about that site, so I prob wouldnt order from them.

nice male inthat video lets hope you get a good male

I would do dithers with the solo Midas. Barbs, SD, cats, plecos, even something like in the video (though I imagine you occasionally have to replace them. No?). Things that he's not likely to see as a threat/competition, are care free and fast/tough. And raise him with them.

Small update: Sent Rapps an email two days ago regarding his current stock and shipping cost, still waiting on a reply. Checking into bluegrass aquatics, too many negative reviews for me to chance a purchase. Checked local shops and there are tons of Devils and no Midas. Thanks for all your input. I may turn my attention to getting some dithers or pictus cats or some other cichlid to compliment my future Midas .... to pass the time while I wait. Any other thoughts on tankmates? I still love the idea of a few pictus cats. Maybe a salvini or Oscar. Though Im thinking an Oscar will get beat up. I also like Firemouth .... okok Im rambling.
