I'm no expert by any means but it seems like this is something that has a 50% chance of working given the right conditions.

I'm currently attempting something similar in a 125 with an oscar, a hybrid, and a devil. So far I have not had any aggression issues at all, but I dont think one is out of the woods until after a year in or more.

Is it best to have the Midas smaller then the rest of the cichlids?

Theres a lot of factors involved but in general like many cichlids yes.

If you start them all young together, with a reset tank ( no established territories yet) you have a much better chance of success.

For example, years ago I used to keep an oscar with some angelfish in a 90 planted tank without any issues. They angelfish would actually swim with the O and wait for him to eat first and crunch the bigger pellets so they could go after the smaller bits.

I had no caves in that tank but plenty of visual line breaks from plants. Also I never fed live fish as to not reinforce the fish=food correlation. Lots of bugs were fed tho.

You are ultimately at the mercy of the fish's temper to there are things you can do to minimize the chance and perhaps not promote aggression.

Ok. Do you advise to put a Midas in a community or are they better off solo?
This answer has been answered multiple time in this thread. It basically boils down to, if you do it, do it at your own risk...You’re dealing with some potentially very aggressive fish. All of the fish in your tank have the ability to grow up to be killers. Not just the midevil. If you are going to do it, right now as juveniles is the best time to do it. I’d read up in the archives about amphilophus and how aggressive they can be. Also, you will need a really big tank for that group as they get older.
