You'd be better off figuring what is the largest possible tank you can get and build a stock list for that size tank.

well the problem is im not gonna even bother buying a bigger tank if all i can keep is weak 8 or 9" long fish. i have an 9" oscar now and i want bigger badder fish ... so ill stick with my 50 if i can't get bigger fish

Many of these I have cut and pasted.
RTC
TSN
RTCxTSN
Paroon
Aligator gar:
If you want to provide a good home for the fish you should be providing at least 4x its size in tank length and 1.5x in tank depth in order to give it some room to move and exist in something resembling a life. This would equate to a 12'x 4.5' tank, which, if it is 2' tall , would be just over 800 gallons. But I'd make it 15' long.

silver or jardini aro
clown knife:
Some say a 200 would do but I like the standard 3' width of a 300gal or maybe 30" wide a little longer for the arows.

It's also worth noting that many can live for around 20 years or more, which makes owning one a considerable commitment. Some aquarists also buy a young specimen with the intention of buying a bigger tank as it grows, without realising the true potential size of the species. Public aquaria are already inundated with far too many 'cast offs' from the hobby, and are unlikely to take a big one off your hands. No fellow hobbyists will have the facilities to do so, either.

It's sad to think how many hundreds of these are doomed to a drastically shortened existence by the aquatic trade. Please don't buy one if you see them on sale. This advice may appear a little extreme, but consider that nowhere can be found a report of a single hobbyist keeping a group of adult-sized specimens. Considering the thousands that are exported each year for the hobby, this would seem to tell its own story.

2 paroons in a 1000 g is good... rtc... maybe, aro, probably, bichir - any species, gar - go for it! Don't over stock!

i agree.

if you just plan on keeping any of these fish for only a few years then getting rid of them, imo you are keeping these fish for the wrong reason. its one thing to get a fish and find out after a while that the fish isnt working out in your tank (its getting too big or causing a problem like picking on other fish) but to say right up front "yeah i just plan on keeping these fish for a few years then giving them to a friend when they get too big" just dosnt make sense to me really.

So your thinking your friend is just gonna leave this tank unstocked, waiting for you to grow fish out for him?:screwy: Likely by the time you have fish that you need to move he will already have a stocked tank. 1000g sounds like alot but there are still limits on the amount of fish that can be put in that tank.

I just can't see anyone putting the time money and effort into a huge tank, and not have it stock shortly there after.

any other opinions? i know personally someone who has an rtc and tsn along with something else that i dont remember but not as big in 240 gal aquarium for 8 years now and they are only outgrowing it now. i dont at alll plan on keeping any of these fish for that long. 2-3 years is enough for me then theyll probably go in my friend (LFS owners) few thousand gallon tank he has in the store. hes the one who has them now. he said hed suggest 240 if im not keeping that long but i wanted mfk's opinion also if it could go any smaller

somehow I dont think you will like what mfk's opinion will be if you want to go smaller than the 240g that your friend has recommended because a true mfker will tell you what you don't want to hear.

If you are worried about having a smaller tank than that why even bother.

I have read a few posts telling you the reality of these fish and seen you not accept what they have offered as opinion or shall I say experience because they probably have these fish.

he owns my LFS ... its not his house aquarium and he is putting his rtc and tsn in there in 2 months .. and its all for sale so stuff will be going in and out of the 1000g.

and to the other statement .. saying tis for the wrong reason. well i don't see how. unlike alot of members on this site i don't consider fish my children .. i can take care of them as long as i know how and enjoy watching and feeding them but fish arent something id get attached to for 10 or 15 years .. i will most likely have more important priorites in life in a few years. until im well established in a long time house that is my own (not my parents) then maybe debate getting a few bigg tanks.
