Min. tank sizes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fish like TSN RTC and Alligator Gar simply do not belong in the average aquarium, they need ponds. Period. Why would you want to take ownership of a living thing knowing full well that it will vastly outpace your ability to care for it. You would be doing a huge disservice to these fish by buying them. You cannot cut corners when it comes to fish like this.
If you want a "Big Bad Fish" but cant own a tank for these monsters get a Gulper Cat or a smaller Wolf Fish species, but still be prepared to throw done some money when it comes to keeping them fed.

Don't worry eventually someone will stop in and lie to you and tell you that a small tank will be okay!

How long have you had the Oscar in the 50 gal? In most cases, if an Oscar is kept in healthy consditions in a large enough tank they reach 10~12" long and 1.5~2" thick within a year...

What is the biggest sized tank you can realisticallt get? Why not make that decision and then consider fish that will be appropriate for it?

The whole concept of taking on more than you can handle knowing you cannot handle it with the plan to push it off on someone else when it becomes to much... is a very immature approach...

rtc and tsn's need more than 240's...

somehow I dont think you will like what mfk's opinion will be if you want to go smaller than the 240g that your friend has recommended because a true mfker will tell you what you don't want to hear.

If you are worried about having a smaller tank than that why even bother.

I have read a few posts telling you the reality of these fish and seen you not accept what they have offered as opinion or shall I say experience because they probably have these fish.

so? i got a few opinions .. i read them.l last time i checked there were more then 7 members on mfk lol. just seeing what else is out there. reality is alot of people here consider their fish like their children. .. i don't consider them like that. i treat my fish like fish .. treat my dog liek a dog not a human. although i don't get how people say these tank sizes for fish but have no problem leaving a dog for hoursss in a dog house thats not much bigger then their bodies. lol anyways. .. thanks guys. i'll figure it out for myself. you guys take it to the extreme a little. thanks tho

a pond wont be easy since it has to go in my room ... and still not answering my question guys! .. i know their are people online here who have rtc's and tsn's in their home aquariums so what sizes? can someone just copy and paste the list then add numbers after each?
A rtd or shovel nose will take massive tanks sounds like u dont got room for them....

or .. how about we assume the biggest im going to get is 180 gallons .. what big predators can i get? i dont really want smallerr birchirs or anything that only gets 9 or 10 inchs .. and my oscar has been in there for 4 months now. he grew from 6-9 inchs in 3 months so not too bad i thought? i could be wrong .. unless they are supposed to grow 4 or 5 inchs a month? never heard of it tho

Ahhh...let MFK do the research for ya

You'd be better off figuring what is the largest possible tank you can get and build a stock list for that size tank.

Agreed.

If you don't like what people are telling you then sorry but its' the truth. I had a RTCxTSN that grew from 20"-27" in less then 6 months.

You need to really look at the space provided and decide what you can fit. It seems to me that you were looking for us to tell you that a 100 gallon would work great. but that's not the case. and you seem to be getting over sensative to the topic. Take our advise and things will work out alot better.

And as for you pal. He could have not feed the RTC as well as he should have of he may have not kept the water as clean as he should have these will contribute to a stunted fish.

lol well i guess you killed a little time needlessly writing this as i already said i have a tank thats guarenteed more then 1000 gallons or 9xx i forget exactly that my friend is putting his in now that i could put mine in. already said that so anywayssss.
Didn't take that long really.
Just wanted to make sure someone else wasn't reading that it was ok to buy one and grow it out for someone that probably won't take it.
Fish stores get thousands of calls a year asking them to be rid of their fish. Sounds like someone wants to sell you a fish, tank, and the rest of the stuff you'll need.

i know personally someone who has an rtc and tsn along with something else that i dont remember but not as big in 240 gal aquarium for 8 years now
My pacu got 22" in 7 years. And RTC and TSN grow twice as fast.

Absolute truth.

Bro if your waiting on someone to come lie and say a 240 -300 is big enough for a RTC or TSN or Alligator Gar... Then maybe you should let a LFS sell you on that idea. They are more than willing to sell you fish to irresponsibly stock a tank with.
