start doing drugs... and when she yells at you say "well, I got bored without a big fish tank so I just started shootin up H. Its your fault"

that should work

That always works, then she can rent out your room after she kills you.

rofl! Thanks for all the responses guys, you've had me laughing my bum off for a few minutes now. I'd told her before she was lucky I liked fish and not ol' H. If I start leaving syringes filled with saline and powder around, as well as little baggies with baking soda she might get the message. She has already been involved in the hobby, her mother kept a 150g for about twenty years or so, so she grew up with fish. She just thinks they smell bad, and doesn't want to deal with it. As far as my fish go though, I work so I pay for everything, I do all the maintainence as well as just taking care of the fish feedings. She knows that she won't have to touch it, but for some reason she just doesn't want it... x_X Moms...so confusing. The one plus is that I'm moving out in a year I suppose xD

Wait how does a 55 gallon tank have a 7 foot stand?

Sounds like the classic "I didn't say it was you fault, I said I'm blaming you for it." The fact that your moving out in a year was the give away. When we move out parents get squirrelly and worried that you won't be able to survive by yourself, especially financially. Mine did that 3 times (dive school, college, grad school) and it never got any easier. She may also be concerned that when you move out you'll leave the tank at home. I know one friend who did that, it did not end well.

As far as how to approach it, I'd say leave the tank in the basement till you move out, saves the head ache of dealing with stressed parents.

Just sit down and have a conversation with her. The key is sitting down.

On-the-go conversations do not go over so well with busy/stressed parents. The fact that you told her you wanted to sit down and talk about something tells her it's serious. When you mention the fish tank, she may seem surprised you are so adament about setting it up. Just be sure to stay calm, and not let emotions get the best of you.

If she tells you "no" still, just act OK with it. Don't question why, just act OK with it.

As a conversation closer say "I know this is your house, and you make the rules, and I respect that."

That should go over real well.

You say its a big house with oodles of space so talk to her about putting it in your bedroom or maybe a spot in the garage. It doesnt get too cold down there does it?

The stand is seven ft. long, it's got cabinets beneath and next to the tank, and the canopy opens up right above the tank. It's like a 'window' where you put the tank, then nail the boards it came with around it so it'll look like the tank is part of it :) It's got it's own power supply too, so no more multiplugs for me xD IF I ever get it set up...

Well, one thing is that I'm not going to leave the tank when I move... I already have a place to go, but circumstances don't allow it for another year. The bad thing is we have no basements, I live in Louisiana, and by the rivers thigns flood really bad, so we don't do basements.

The thing I'm concerned about outside is not cold, I'd need a chiller if anything with the heat we get! It's the mosquitos and west nile, etc. I know there are things you can do to kill the larvae and stuff, but it'd be troublesome. Plus outside there are stray dogs, cats, and wild animals like possums and raccoons. The stand/cabinet would be scratched up, chewed on, sprayed, eaten, etc. I just don't think it would work outside. But inside we've got tons of room in the kitchen, dining area, living room, halls, my bedroom...hers if it came to it... [like I'd allow it!] The other bedrooms house the animals I like to call siblings, and I'd rather keep them away from the fish as most are young.

Im gonna assume that you're a teenager. Your best bet is to get some magazines or send her some nice illustrations of a showcase aquarium and how it can make the house look nicer. What's her favorite color. Tell her you'll let her pick out a fish or a decoration with that color.

Yep, seventeen with another year til I'm out. Just had my b-day on the first actually xD

That's a good idea there, she does like colorful fish, unlike my 'drab' angels, loach, cories, etc.

Thanks ^^
