it all depends on personal prference
what are you talking about?:screwy:
personal preference of having a fish crammed in a tank that is way too small? get real! 240+, a tank with at least a 4' wide x 8' long footprint, or a good sized pond is needed to house lmb.

the reason people say 240+ is because no matter what, unless the tank is REALLY tall, a 240g will is a guaranteed setup for life for a lmb.

Yeah like I posted earlier, if youve got a tank that is 8ft long and 3ft wide there is no reason you couldnt keep a LMB in there forever. Even if you got lucky and in 5 years the fish reached a world record size of 32", that tank would still be ok. By no means perfect for a fish that size but it would do. If you had one 8ft long by 4ft wide, you would never need anything bigger. The bigger the better but these specs would be fine.

yeah i know, i was just utterly shocked that multispecies tamer would say that its "personal preference" to keep a fish in a small tank.

the chances of a bass reaching 20 inchs and 5 pounds are pretty slim, expecially with northern MI bass like i keep so I see a 180 as an ideal size tank for a bass around 20 inchs but that is me. And yes foot print of the tank would come into effect, need to be 2 1/2 foot wide at least.

that all depends where you got the LMB from, here in Ontario average size for a LMB is only 3.5 lbs....so a 75g tank is plenty, it also depends on how many you're putting in the tank.....i have a SMB in 10-20g tank right now that he's getting to big for. he's only about 4-5'' im upping to a 75g soon

sorry for the double post, forgot to mention if you raise the bass from infancy it wont grow as big as it will in the wild, my SMB will only get to be about 2-3 lbs

75gal?!? Are you kidding? The reason why LMB dont get bigger in Ontario because of limited growing season. But in aquarium they have longest growing season due to the temps and the diet so please dont compared from the wild to the aquarium as its different enviroment. Even 3.5 lbs bass in 75gal sounds cramped and cruelty.

The author of the post never mentions if he planned on keeping the bass in the tank for life. Most normal needs fish are fine in any aquarium as relative to their given size at the present time of occupancy. For life is a completely different question. I would have no objections to releasing a healthy fish back to its native enviroment. Even less objections to popping it on a cedar plank on the grill. :)

I dont think its good idea to release any fish back in the waterways after kept in aquarium.
