Minimum tank size for JD & GT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on what size tank you put them in.I have a single GT in a 55,he's about 9 inches, and it just look like there is not enough room to keep anything else with him to me.He swims all over the tank.So he lives alone.

I plan on having my female Green Terror and Male Jack Dempsey long term in my 100 gal with some Silver Dollars and Convicts

I also have a Carpintis and a Vieja Argentea growing with them...wanted to see what turned out prettiest then was gonna keep 2 of the 4.

So far the Vieja and Carpintis are looking the best...oops :P lol

I had that exact pairing in a 75.

A 40g will do fine, for a VERY long time. a 55g they could live healthy and happily for life.

so your saying that 2 known tank aggressors can live happily in a 3ft tank??:screwy:

thats terrible advice. a 55g may start to look small for a male GT once it starts hitting 8"+ (my midas is starting to make my 4ft tank look small at 8.5"), and your saying they will be ok when they are 10" long and most likely aggressive as adults.

the 4ft (55g) would be pushing it if they are both male and will likely become too small leading to fights and possibly a death, but as mentioned 5ft+ would be better. of course this paragraph is just my opinion.

It really depends but I would say at least 75 but better if more. Of course if you add some dithers (silver dolars) to the mix things would be better. Every time I have had a GT and a JD the GT eventually grows weary of the JD and the punking begins. And I have a 90 gallon. My current JD though has been doing ok but I credit my dithers for the peace.

I would agree with this except to make the point that both of these fish are notorious for being slow growers once they reach about 4 to 5 inches and so he could actually get a long for some time before seeing any real troubles (and if there is any trouble my money is on the GT). Dithers might extend this time a bit as well.

55 for life would be cruel however.

if housing both togeather i would say at least 100g, however if your doing seperate they can live in a 55g but a 75g would be much better for the each of them

So that's why my brother has a ~55g with JD, 2x GT, 1x RD, 4x Firemouth, 1x Oscar and they are all in perfect condition, and his Oscar won in a local contest.

He's running 2x FX5 and 1 internal UV sterilizer on the tank.

I realise you are only stating a large tank size with all the best of intentions for the fish, but what you are saying now is misleading people, to think bigger is always better.
There is absolutely no aggression in his tank, other from the breeding firemouths, but they don't do any damage.
