Monster 822 gallon (ext) aquarium build thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Damn, it's looking good! That background is dope! I basically had the same exact questions as pacu mom, plus a few more:

How do the seams of the acrylic look...any bubbling at all?

Is the back side (where the background is attached) a clear sheet of acrylic or black? I was told that black acrylic at that size (thickness) is wayyyy more expensive than clear (it would have added $2 to $3K to the cost).

Do you have lids for it?

Do you have a siphon tube to clean poop off the bottom? I made my own out of PVC, but this place (http://mightymagnets.com/supers.html) has them at a reasonable price and I like that the tube is clear so you can see what you are picking up a little better (If I had sand I would be worried about siphoning it right out of the tank and not even knowing it since my tube is standard white PVC).

Looking good man. Now that they finally delivered the tank, you are moving quick!

Thank you for the compliment about the room, we actually did the ten foot tank to take up as much wall space as possible and try and frame it in to give the in wall effect, but the there is a slope of the roof line that prevents for the perfect square tank enclosre look, but the wife wants to try it anyway to see if its to much of an eye sore, so we will see.
I decided to try a back ground, becasue when i had my 300 hundered gallon tank, with the paper back grounds, between blue, black and a rook wall looking ones i used, the rock looking paper back ground always seems to draw the most attention. So that's why I thought i'd try the 3D back ground, it really looks nice in person, not to mention, you never see very large tanks with them..
Yes I have four hole in each side over flow boxes, my plan is to use two holes for the wet/dry, on each side. Both wet/dry will have there own internal pump but they will be tied together with a 1 1/2 tube. Then i am going to run three canister in parallel, split the flow back to one of each overflow box hole, and have the other two hole used to supply water to the reeflo dart pump that will run all three canister, if that makes sense? should be give me about a 4-5 times turn over.

Hey Alex,
Yes, back and side panels were all back, at no extra cost from the vendor, I had to have black side panels becasue if not you would be able to see the overflow boxes internal working, that would not be good. What they did was use 1/4'' thick black acrylic panels to cover the clear glass. If I had a way to ship some to you, i have two 1/4'' 4x8 sheets of acrylic sheets just laying around in my shed. I got from a friend. The purpose of it is to cover tanks with back arcylic with out painting. Look pretty cool.
I do have a ciphon tube, the one like you get from petmarts, but it like 36'' long. The plan is to attached a stick of some sort as an extention to reach the bottom. Vaccuming the sand from what i understand is not that bad, because you really just have to skim the top where the mess sits. I am using carribe Sea sand, which seems pretty darn heavy actually. So with the tube being clear i will be able to see if am sucking up to much sand or how to combat this.
Yes, I have lids, that damn near take two people to lift onto the tank, they are that heavy. I'll get pic's of them for you.
There are not many bubbles in the seams actually. After seening some people tanks on here, mines has virtually none in comparasion. I am truly impressed with the tank, so much so, that if I had to get another one, I would use them again and you know that's saying something considering how angry i was on the time frame it took to get the tank. lol
Yes, its moving fairly fast, but manily becasue after waiting so long to arrive, I had plenty of time to aquire just about everthing i thoguhtI might need. Just needed it to arrive to see about the plumbing situation..

Before i go any futher, i'd like to thank sevearl MFK members for all their help with this build . If i missed anyone please forgive me, you are apprecaited as well.

Your lids must be massive... those openings are huge. My lids are only 15" x 26" and I thought mine were heavy and awkward to move around; I almost fell off my ladder trying to get them on the tank...no joke...thought I was going to break my neck.

Do you have a feeding hole? If not, moving a monster lid everyday to feed will get old really quick. I just left my middle lid off, but you have jumpers so you probably wouldn't want to do that. Cutting a small (3") hole in one of your lids would work...you could use a hole saw.

I see what you are saying in regards to the black acrylic. I actually have the same 1/4" black acrylic sheets, but mine are just taped to the back of the tank (not as clean looking as yours). Did your buddy just give you the two 1/4" 8x4 sheets of black acrylic? Those run around $300 each!

Glad to hear they did a good job on the tank. It definitely looks nice. Looking forward to seeing it stocked!

BTW, if you ask the mods to change the title of your thread and you want more traffic, be sure to include the gallonage or dimensions. I think a lot of people might see "fish bowl" and pass right over your thread and miss out on getting to see your beautiful beast!

Sorry if I'm being annoying...I'm just excited for you!

Oh now, its not annoying at all, i actually love seeing other's tanks and want people to see mine.
I sent an email to think was the moderator to change the name to 822 gallon build, if not I will start a new thread and put the old pic in it to get it started again.

No I don't have a feeding hole, but I will need one, its not way i will be lifting that up everyday.

Yes I was given the arcylic sheets, and they are just sitting in my shed taking up space.

Fot got to thank JK47 for the 3d Backgroound help..that pond foam stuff is amazing..
