Monster Planted Setups?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No problem, it's great stuff but needs high light, CO2 & ferts. I sell it to a LFS and they want all I can give. I walk in they store and they are asking for it.

Wow, now that is stunning nosegoblin. I love the contrast of the two settings. Is the bog/drift wood stacked up on the right hand side? You know im going to have to ask for a list of plants, fish and equipment now don’t you?
Really great work though buddy.

Thanks for the compliments Joshy. I've just redecorated the tank prior taking this picture.

My setup indeed has bunch of driftwood pieces stacked to the left corner in order to provide some hideouts for my clown loaches and it also hides 3 internal filters and some canister filter inputs/outputs as well. Biggest piece of the driftwood is around 80x30x40cm in dimensions and it's also hollow so it doesn't need a rocket scientist to figure out where all the clown loaches are hiding. ;)

In bottom of my tank I have about 1cm thick layer of clay/peat/PMDD mixture and on top of that some 5-6cm of fine sand which actually is bought from local hardware store as sandblasting sand.

What comes to the plants, I not sure if I even know all the exact names. The driftwoods are covered with anubias, java fern here and there and there are also some Ceratopteris cornuta kind of stuck to the driftwood on the water level. Then on the front left corner there is a couple of Nymphae lotus. On front in general there are miscellaneous Cryptocorynes. On the center and the right corner there are miscellaneous sword plants. In the mid section there are also some Crinum thaianums and some Hornworts. Usually the hornworts tend to float in the surface thanks to some nosey clown loaches that just can't resist poking the plants in the bottom. On the surface there floats few large water hyacinths which you can see on my newer attachment as well as all the common houseplants that have their roots on the corners of my aquarium.

My favourite fishes of choice in my tank is definitely a school of 15 clown loaches which I have had for many years and from which the biggest one is ~16cm. On the bottom there live also some coolie loaches, a red-tailed black shark and 4 big fat and lazy SAEs. In the middle and near surface there live some 40 Harlequin rasboras, ~15 tiger barbs and 3 kissing gouramis.

The filtration is taken care with Eheim 2260, Eheim 2217, 2 x Fluval 4+'s and one smaller Eheim internal filter. The lighting is carried out by using three lival forte t-model 70w metal halide lamps that are actually meant for lighting display windows and stores. :) I also have a complete CO2-system at here but the gas container has been empty at least couple of months or so. I just haven't had time to go get it filled again. Therefore the only fertilization that I currently have been using is PMDD that I add during weekly water changes and the clay/peat/PMDD mix on the bottom

Geez, buddy, you are one ‘aquascaper’!
Am I right in thinking you have tried to go for a particular biotope, as a lot of the fish and plants are from similar geographical locations. Or is it just coincidence as part of the end result? Either way it works really well. Would much appreciate close-ups when you get time in the future! And hell, nearly everyone loves clown loaches! Though I would be worried about them digging and disturbing the plants to much, sounds like you got a well behaved bunch. And has the stopped action of the C02 slowed plant growth much?

I figured I'd go ahead and throw some of mine in there. Here is my 125 before my last rescape.

Its changed a lot since these shot were taken. I will post some more pics as soon as the new scape fills in a bit.

Wow spinnerbayt, you have made your 125 look so much bigger! If i had of guessed i would have said 300g+! What’s the tank stats? Ah and in particular what’s that grass like plant in the foreground rooted in the substrate?

The foreground is glosso and some micro swords. The tank has changed a lot in the last month. I moved all the fish out to my other tanks and drained it dry. Took out the red soilmaster and replaced it with the charcoal soilmaster. My last fishing trip yelded some very large driftwood stumps (lake is drawn down for winter exposing tons of wood). I added a stump and put a lot of java ferns and a couple hand fulls of other plants back into the tank. I'm not sure how it will end up. I want to add another stump on the other end as my new discus all seem to bicker over who gets the one. I planted some of the glosso back and added some baby tears but its all just kind of thrown in there for now. When I get it looking good I'll try and take some more pics. I may also change out the lighting system. I have someone trying to get me a couple 175w MH's or I may ODNO some T8's like I have on several other tanks with DIY PVC reflectors. Well when I figure all this out I'll post what I end up with.

http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/general-planted-tank-discussion/34634-behemoth-1600-gallon-planted-tank.html

I don't even want to think about how much was put into this tank just knowing what I have put into my planted 125g.

200K. tom posts up a rough quote of it.

you guys have some pretty nice looking planted tanks. good to see people are making them in big tanks.

here is mine. its not quiet as monster as you wanted, but it is fully planted. its a 75 gallon with mainly wild caught discus in it. its pretty low tech too and this is the start of some big changes i have planned with it.
