WoW that would suck. Good read though. Had a couple different 35 gallons leak in my younger years, both where in basements but it was still very messy. Just moved my 125 into my basement a couple months ago because it was in the family room and when all the grand kids were over at xmas or easter i could always see the tank moving with the bounce of the floor.

yes old thread, but worth the read. and now the paranoia.

Anyone else have any other insurance company stories? I called mine before I set up my 125 and we went through a lot of scenarios. In all cases the stand and equipment would be covered. The tank (mine is so cheap it doesn't matter) would be covered if it failed because of fire, a burglar, a fight in the house, a friend takes a hammer to it for the lulz, pretty much everything besides the next sentence. If the tank just fails the tank isn't covered but that's what lifetime warranty are for.

All of that above is peanuts compared to the property damage. I would lose $6000 in computers alone and 2 stories of furniture walls basebords and hardwood flooring would be wrecked. I have dealt with my insurance company many times on the automotive side. Living in the hell hole of brooklyn my whole life, I have had 6 cars stolen in the 12years I have been driving. Every time they come at you with this FIRM amount that they are willing to pay, most of the time far below what it would cost to put you in the same position you were before (that's what insurance is for right?). I'm not talking about expecting a check big enough to walk in and out of the dealer with a brand new car but... All of the times I had to fight everyday multiple times a day and I would get $500-3000 more than that original firm offer. That's fraud in my book. No one else I have spoken to fights that first offer they just take it.

On to home insurance. I see the OP commented that he is a handy man and did a lot of the work himself. I'm also pretty handy but I have a job and I pay insurance and I hate carpentry. How bad are the home adjusters after an aquarium accident? Do they give you a lot of "floors are fine" "basebords just need some paint" "walls need a skim coat of plaster". I know they really stick it to people that have lost their homes due to disasters so how ****ty will they treat an aquarist. I guess it will be alot of fighting but I fell I would have more ground to stand on. I could get multiple 10+ licensed contractors in to quote the damage done by the water and the cost to repair it.

Last part to my rant. When you push for more money you get to a point where they wont offer anymore and you have to go to arbitration. I never messed with it because I needed my checks and it really smells like a kangaroo court. I believe all insurance contracts include this so you can't take them to a real court. So in the end even with 10 estimates and pictures they could sill under pay.

Damn i'm sorry man, hope all works out for the best.
WAIT NEVER MIND THIS WAS 4 YEARS AGO............. FAIL LOL
