He could chew now...as adults...it would be more like REMOVING fingers.
Books and research can prepare you to an extent, but I really hate to see anyone get a species like that without having real-life experience with adult specimens before the fact.
I still don't think that large_cichlids has fully grasped what he's really gotten into. Maybe go to a zoo or rescue that has one to check an adult out in person.
This an Argus Monitor enclosure, but it will still give him an idea how big of an enclosure he need for ONE Nile Monitor.
