I know my python isn't a very efficient method, because it drains so much water straight down the sink. Is there a better way to do it (other than with a hose and buckets?)

Got me. I have a 300 gallon and I'm still using a python. If I do just a water change with out doing the gravel I use a 2in blue flex tube that I got at Lowes. It was cut to length and sucks a ton of water. I just use the old gravity method to get it going. But to fill the tank back up? back to the python. I can drain 150 gallons out in under ten minutes.

powerhead connected to hose that runs out out to your sink?

by the python not being efficient you mean the water it wastes? if so you could syhon the water and drain it outside or something. then just fill it up with the sink. thats what i do

It took me a minute to figure out that's what he meant by not efficient. I drain mine into the shower...

Just get a large diameter hose...pythons are overpriced garbage IMO. I use a water hose I got at Lowes, which I then attach to the sink.

I personally use one of my FX5's.. Hook a extra hose to the output and turn the canister back on and pumping 900gph out the window..lol
Filling it back up takes me longer though, i have the python hooked to the kitchen sink and then the garden hose from out side filling all at once..

i just use the python to gravel vac, once im done with cleaning the gravel i just siphon the water into my front lawn with a hose. Then i fill the tank back up with the python.

that way i can water the grass instead of draining it.
