Most efficient way to do W/C

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just use a standard gravel vac and get a tube that is long enough to drain outside.. gravity will do all the work for you..

my tube actually is like 50' of clear tubing attached to a garden hose.. that way it gets all the way out the door for all my tanks, and i can fill it back up using the same tube..

on the tank end, i have a valve that allows me to stop the filling/draining of the tank whenever i want.. for filling ill use a different pvc piece on the end.. for vacs i use a longer piece of pvc that reaches the bottom of the tank..

i can take a pic of my rig this weekend if anyone wants.. or i can draw up a pic on paint.. cuz my explanation is kinda confusing..

I was told this weekend that one of the fastest way to do a water change is with an FX5, if you have one that is. You simple get a FX5 spare stop valve and connect a 1" hose to it. Draining water should take 5 minutes. Thanks Rich!

Yeah, the sink uses too much water. My water bill almost doubled when I started using it.

You do know you don't have to leave the sink running to siphon the water out, right? Unless by chance your sink is at a higher elevation then your tank.

I just run the Python to my bathtub so it's alot lower then the tank (I start it by sucking on it, just like a regular siphon), and the water comes out faster. I only hook the python up to the sink to refill the tank.

I had an extra bulkhead on the bottom of my tank so I just installed a simple ball valve and a hose barb. From there i hook a clear hose I got at homedepot and I drain into the huge pots in our front "Courtyard" type area (completely flagstoned with a bunch of HUGE HUGE HUGE pots with big aloe vera/cacti) or the yard. Then I attach the garden hose to the drain line and viola. Simple without any wasted water.

FX5 come with a third aquastop valve for that purpose :)

Has any one tried filling there tank with an fx5? I am on a well so I gota soften my water and thought of using my fx5 to fill my tank instead of using a bucket one by one...?

Also, when you guys just fill your tank straight from the tap, do you just add your chlorine remover to the tank (an not to the water before the tank)? Since im on a well I have never had to mess with that and was just curious? :)

I use a siphon that goes out into the yard to water trees when doing a gravel vac. To fill I ran a 1/2" copper line to just above my aging tank. Just open the valve to fill.

I'm in the process of getting my Ocean Clears and UV set up. I'm thinking I'll run a "T" from the discharge of the ReeFlo Barracuda with a valve and pipe it outside. Then if I just want to change water I can just shoot it outside with the pump and won't have to worry about dragging out the siphon hose.

I use a pondmaster 700gph pond pump, hooked to this clear vinyl tubing from Home-Depot to drain my 150-G tank, output to kitchen sink.

Refill with standard garden hose on kitchen sink.

I have no substrate so its very easy, but if I did I would still do it this way, and use the python on occasion for gravel vacs.

I know when I redo my pond it will be ball valves on the pump return that go straight to a drain. Should be able to do waterchanges with nothing more than the flip of a valve and 2 faucet knobs (allready Tee'd together and running into pond) Will install carbon filters so no more de-chlor too........

Should be able to have w/cs done before the first beer is gone........

I use a siphon with a long hose to drain (out the front door)... and a garden hose hooked to a bathroom sink to fill. I rigged some PVC and a ball valve to the hose so that I can hang it on the side of the tank and turn it on/off.
