Whats your most important to remember rule of fishkeeping?

i think the most important thing for fish keeping is to get a tank and remember to add water
 
does respect for them count?

like.. not saying, "oh they are just fish"

The most important one of those is Stocking the stock of you tank will determin what kind of filtration you need and how large and how often of water changes you need to do
 
lighting is the least important. Water changes and filtering are tied IMO. Lot's of filtering w/o water changes isn't good, while no filtering with lot's of w/c change also isn't too good. Stocking affects both of those
 
depends on what fish you're keeping, some fish are A LOT more tolerant of tank conditions than others, but i think if i had to put one above the others i'd say water changes.
 
i think they are all equally important in one way or another. but some are more short term important than others
