water changes, filtering and stocking because you need to have clean water to have happy fish as well as the right type of fish

lighting is also important but i dont find it necessary for all types of fish

You can compensate under filteration with WC
You can compensate over stocking with WC

But you can't compensate WC with either, unless you have a denitrator.

So WC is the most important. It's like the rain in nature for the river to replenish with clean water. Filteration is like the plants and bacteria in the water to elimiate pollutant.

Anybody can put fish into a tank, you can even put the correct stocking, but it takes discipline to keep up with those weekly water changes.

I'm glad I wasn't the first to say that lol.

Don't start adding medication to the tank or tossing in salt or raising the temperature when you see a blemish, torn fin or you see the fish scratching. It has been my experience that these symptoms and behaviors usually mean nothing. The fish can be stressed and damaged much more by the remedial measures than by what is incorrectly assumed to be a disease. I mention this because it is often very difficult to fight the instinct to start medicating.

I would replace the option of lighting with 'quarantining', and say that all are important components, with WC's being the glue that holds it all together.

I would say water changes. You can filter the crap out of dirty old water in an understocked well light tank, but old water is old water. Unless you have a plant filter and top offs maintain your water quality, nothing make dirty water clean better than new water.

The most important things to remember in fishkeeping are:

1. Obtain a tank. You will have a very wet flooring if you fill your imaginary tank with real water.
2. Add water. You will have dead fish if you don't remember to add water into the tank.
3. Add fish. Your tank with water will look empty if you forget to add fish.
