Motoro Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two emperor 400's on my 55g that I use for a convict breeder. I think you're going to need more filtration. Those are only rated "UP TO" 80g a piece. Have you considered doing a small wet/dry for it. You'd be better off than adding another small filter. Rays have a huge bio load.

I have considered the wet dry but dont know how to go about doing that. Would that Fluval in tank help at all? Since its not just skimming the middle of the tank? It also has that attatchment that is like a power head.

When companies do flow rate tests, its usually without media. Once you pack media in your filter, you only get about 65% of whatever the box says is the flow rate, better if you were to assume there was even less. If your emperors say 400 gallon per hour in total, best to assume its only 200. You're really going to need something bigger, the fluval inside probably does close to nothing too.

Ok thanks. My ray is very active and levels are about perfect and she is eating just fine so im not worried right now.
Here is my latest idea. Undergravel filter with the intake pipe hooked up to a powerhead or one of my emperors. Have the power head push the water towards my other filter. This would cover all 3 levels of the tank (bottom middle and top) would this work?

i have sand... Which was my concern with the undergravel filter. I have about 4-5" deep sand all the way around. I added around 60 lbs total.

You can see the sand in the pictures. With and without the ray

I would say 5" of sand is far too much. I'd have around 1-2" personally. I'm also confused...you got 4-5" of sand out of 60 pounds in a 125g? I put 50lb's in my 120 and it barely covers the bottom.

I would highly suggest looking in the setup and filtration forum. It will help you greatly in building a sump. Or youtube it. The internet is amazing!

Honestly, my two emperors hardly keep up with a few convicts and their babies, no way will they keep up with a ray on their own.

Ok maybe its more around 3". You can see in the pics and its evenly distributed. But yeah i know i need more filtration i just dont know how im going to do it. I have been looking at sumps and will prob end up building one. Thanks
Tyler

Even 3" is too much, so much stuff will be caught in it. When you start vaccuming your sand, it'll be like trying to vaccum the whole great wall of china. You're only suppose to have like an inch or so allowing your rays to put sand in some areas while leaving others bare. Forget about undergravel filter, I've heard a couple people trying to use them with rays, never heard of actual success with it.
