Motoro Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah i thought the filter would get clogged and maybe pull the ray down and it wouldnt like that so i passed that idea... I will take pics when i get home of the ray and the tank... maybe i just cant guess how much sand is really in there. I will take pics of the side so you can see. Thanks

Either way, it might not be a bad idea to take some sand out. Think of it this way - you already have sand for your next tank!

For the sump just use a rubbermaid bin and a 5 gallon bucket. The hardest part will be getting the tank to drain into the bin. I'm pretty sure there are overflows out there though that will work easily with a standard tank...or even ones you can make yourself. From there, just have the tank drain into the 5 gallon bucket inside the rubbermaid bin. Fill the bucket with pot scrubbies, put a polishing pad on top to collect poo, and drill holes in the bottom. The bucket drains into the bin, and then you just need a pump to get the water back to the top of the tank.

Fairly cheap and easy to do. Not pretty, but thats what the stand is for, to hide all the crap. You'd be better off in the long run. The sump could handle the bioload of the ray much better than any in tank filters you could add.

Whatever you do, check your nitrates often at first and figure out a water changing schedule.

I think I can see the amount of sand you have from your avatar. Thats a CRAP LOAD of sand...holy crap you need to get some out...

HAHAH!!...JUST LISTEN TO EVERYBODY..NO OFFENSE..
SAND LEVEL'S TOO HIGH SO YOUR GOING TO HAVE THOSE POISONOUS AIR POCKETS..AND WHEN THE RAY DIGS IN..IT'S GOING TO EXPOSE THOSE THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE TANK..
AND YOU DONT' HAVE ENOUGH FILTRATION IN THE TANK..YOU NEED A WET DRY LIKE THEY SAID...BECUASE YOU'RE HANG ON FILTER DOESN'T HAVE A BIG ENOUGH AREA FOR BENEFICIAL BACTERIA..MAYBE YOUR RAY'S OKAY NOW..BUT IT'S SMALL..WAIT UNTIL IT GROWS BIGGER..THEN SEE IF YOUR HANG ON FILTERS CAN HANDLE THE BIO-LOAD

JUST DO THE "DIY 5GALLON BUGGET IN A RUBBERMAID" MAKESHIFT SUMP

COST 20 BUCKS AT THE MOST..ANYWAYS..GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR RAY

I don't think 3" of sand is necessarily too much. A deep sand bed is only bad if its never disturbed and allowed to build up gases. Stingrays spend so much time blowing in the sand, it will pretty much keep any anaerobic pockets from forming in the first place.

I had 3-4" of sand (depending on where the fish piled it up) in my 125g tank with rays, and I've never once had an issue with it. Between the rays, dragon goby, geophagus, and pike cichlids, it was very well turned over.

That said, its not necessary to have that much sand in the tank, when you only need 1-2" to cover the bottom.

As for filtration, definitely go with either a powerful canister filter or a sump. They'll both provide adequate filtration, but the sump provides more water volume and better biological filtration.

To cover up my heaters i used vacuum attachments and drilled holes in them for the heat to escape.
