sand is optional for the keeper but i know for sure rays do better with substrate
with other fish its not as much of a problem as it is with rays as the rays live on top of the substrate
i know many people who have bred rays all of their tanks had substrate
a ray on a bare bittom tank is like a human walking around on a woodern floor with socks on you slip all over the place
it doesnt have to be sand a fine pea gravel will do
rays love to pump and dig in the substrate buy keeping them on a bare base you are taking away one of the things they love most
flip i dont know how many rays you have kept in the past but i would say it cant be many or you would have been able to spot a male ray from a female easy
i have been keeping rays for over 10yrs and can garantee you that rays do better on substrate
