Moving my fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, according to members on here, benficial bacteria does not live in the water column so there is no use to transport used tank water. In my experience (and I've done this with several tanks from 55 to 180g) as long as your bio media is cycled you'll be fine. Just treat the water with some sort of decholorinator before you turn the filters on and you'll be fine. There is absolutely no use to transport water!

Oh and likewise, you can take that water out of your 150 and put it into a 55g with filters that have no established media and the tank will still need to cycle.

Oh right that makes sense...

Just a question...what should he pump threw his filters and use to keep the bacteria in his substrate alive? while he treats the water and gets the tank set up? I was thinking jelly... ketchup might work better tho.

^^^ I honestly use miracle whip. It's low in fat but still has the great taste. It just keeps the bacteria active and promotes a healthier lifestyle for them. I have heard of other members using sweet and sour and bbq sauce.

sounds reasonable :) I'll have to try that next time. Also, the waters really for his fish while everything gets set up.

hahaha, seriously OP, if you have your media established just keep water in the xp's. Get the tank all set up, make sure you dump plenty of water conditioner to nuetralize all the chemicals and what not. Get the tank heated and turn on your filters and add fish. I forget how long the bb can live with not being supported by waste. I have done this on a 150,75,90 and 180 using established media so you should have no probs!
