Musicians only!

LOL as a musician I thought this was going to be a different thread. But as a sound engineer and bassist, with 14 years of classical study under my belt on flute / piccolo I can tell you im a super, super picky listener. And These guys have really stood out to me, they do things others aren't capable of. Not saying other guitarists aren't great either.

Video's at the bottom of my favorites, I suggest watching all of them.

All these guys are picked for different reasons.

*Guthrie is one of the smoothest players i've ever heard, his writing is top notch w/e he writes is very pleasing to listen to. I couldn't change one note in there to tailor it more to my liking.

*Al Di Meola, again, a top writer. Not as clean or smooth as Guthrie but his writing has inspired musicians since the 70's when he was just a young buck. Return to Forever was one of his biggest bands he was in, with an all star line up any fusion fan bows down to. And i've never heard anybody shred on an acoustic guitar, in a latin jazz setting and it sound right. This guy is amazing.

*Frank Gambale, hails from Australia... The home of all great fusion guitarists (lol) But he is very much into fusion and progressive metal, his sweeping is top notch, if you're really into technicality this is your guy. He and Guthrie are very smooth players.

When you hear talent like this, its evident how much the skill in (some) music is increasing... I used to love Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Tony MacAlpine and so on... But there's so much better out there.

Wow great post but the only person who's style wasn't my thing or even his playing was Frank Gambale. I don't know why but he just didn't do it for me. His sweeping techniques is all he really had and personally Rob Marcello has tons more talent in his sweeping techniques. Al Di Meola I have heard many times before and he is an incredible player. He sort of reminds me a little of Andres Segovia. Guthrie Govan is a new one to me and I think he is great. Nice use of some pentatonic scales and stuff. He plays well. Todays guitarists are either talented or not. I mean a person with no experience in music can play better than a person with 10 years of it. It is basically practice your butt off everyday for 6 hours straight( What I have done for the past ten years don't go to bed till 2:30 in the morning because I am still playing) and you have to have the ambishion and desire to play. You have to want it. I'll give you guys an example of what I am talking about to you people who don't play instruments: Imagine you are sitting or doing something at work and you just have tons of riffs and beats in your head. You have solo's going crazy in your head and it just makes you anxious to get home and just play what you create in your head. Music does not come from paper and instructions. It is something you have to create and then comes the written parts. Sometimes your heart races when you created something absolutely amazing that you never thought you could achieve. It is an amazing experience. I truely have a deep pashion for music and creating it. I look at peoples techniques and their ability to make it unique. Like Al Di Maola, He has tons of different scales and notes being played all at once and he is feeling every one of them. He made his sound unique and I like that. All these Nu Metal bands( yes I spelled new, nu because thats what it is called) have guitarists that are good but don't know true meaning of playing metal or it's roots. Not saying they are bad but just lack that something. Rakie you made a great post. :headbang2 Now people post some more guitarists.

So Rakie what do you think of the Guitarists I posted earlier?

I've never liked Malmsteen. I just read too many interviews, he praises himself far too much. Once he made a reference of playing scales and modes that only HE could play, and no other person in the world could, as if he invented new scales and modes. And his music is very boring, it lacks feeling and wears thin. I couldn't sit through more then 3 of his songs.

Rob Marcello is pretty much the same as malmsteen, but he's a slightly better writer, I pick up lots of Tony MacAlpine in his playing. Both of them lack feeling.

Zakk Wylde is awesome, Always liked him, as well as Dime but, that should be a given if you like Zakk.

But im much more into the progressive and really hard metal, which are two different extremes, but shreading just doesn't appeal to me in general, very few guitarists will impress me that way but i've also got a lot of jazz and funk in me so for me a lot of guitarists that are good players, just don't do anything for me.

As far as somebody taking music classes vs. somebody that learned themselves, id disagree solely because their approach to the instrument would be completely different, it would almost impossible to judge them together.

Most self taught musicians lack any and all use of dynamics, they usually favor those flashy players. Thats not a bad thing, its just not what I appreciate.

im 32 now and played since i was 12 or so,i cant remember now if the topic was whos the best or whos our favorite.I feel from your vids ive just re witnessed some of the best and thanks for that.ive seen clips of some of these guys that blew others away ,and then vice versa,i personaly like a lot of hard groove with heart and soul spewing out all over.tom morrelo shows this for me,its plain but so moving, hendrix is more the style i play and feel in my bones,as far as song writing i also love mark knopfler,i feel very fortunate to love so many diferent styles from slayer to setzer to zach to lghtnin hopkins.malmstien and the others are amazingly technical, love to hear them, and watch, but the hard grooving funks from morrelo and jimi grab my heart every time.thank you guys so much for thoes clips, loved them.one good thing i can say about life is I thank God for all the talant and variety, and the freedom to love what we love.:headbang2this is that guy thats always tryin to start a pit and nobody joins in,,,,,,:nilly:

i know this is bass, and im sure you guys can find a better one out there, but just give it a shot,i found this entertaining and a lot of heart for just sittin there,i think he feels it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i hope i do this right.http://youtube.com/watch?v=4dWb-aCWR8U

yea, Victor Wooten is one of the better bassists around. There are many like him, its very unfortunate most music shuns the instrument, IMHO its one of the best sounding instruments out there, and to me id much rather hear bass solo's then guitars.

Look into Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, John Pattitucci and... god I have soo many in mind. But if you look into those three you will see a lot of talent.
