Thats a Chapman stick, you play it by two hand tapping, there is no picking or plucking. Only tapping with all 8 fingers.

He's just keeping time with his foot.

You would like this guy, Andy McKee. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4

He is INCREDIBLE!! Very Unique and soooo much talent!

I've never liked Malmsteen. I just read too many interviews, he praises himself far too much. Once he made a reference of playing scales and modes that only HE could play, and no other person in the world could, as if he invented new scales and modes. And his music is very boring, it lacks feeling and wears thin. I couldn't sit through more then 3 of his songs.

Rob Marcello is pretty much the same as malmsteen, but he's a slightly better writer, I pick up lots of Tony MacAlpine in his playing. Both of them lack feeling.

Zakk Wylde is awesome, Always liked him, as well as Dime but, that should be a given if you like Zakk.

But im much more into the progressive and really hard metal, which are two different extremes, but shreading just doesn't appeal to me in general, very few guitarists will impress me that way but i've also got a lot of jazz and funk in me so for me a lot of guitarists that are good players, just don't do anything for me.

As far as somebody taking music classes vs. somebody that learned themselves, id disagree solely because their approach to the instrument would be completely different, it would almost impossible to judge them together.

Most self taught musicians lack any and all use of dynamics, they usually favor those flashy players. Thats not a bad thing, its just not what I appreciate.

I am not a Self taught Musician at all. As I had been taught by a Blues and classical guitarist for many years Joe Tanari. He showed me things that opened my world to music. I understand fully everything you mentioned. Yes Malmsteen is too cocky and flashy for my taste but hos music inspires me and thats all that counts right? I love Neo-Classical music with orchestra. I mean Yngwie can't say he made his own modes and scales because he didn't. I play his diminshed runs and scales all the time for warm-ups. Do have anything to say about Zakk LMAO!!  He's just as cocky if not even more cocky than Yngwie. I suprised you didn't say anything about Zakk's soloing. Most people say it's a big pile of slop but I feel totally different. I mean yeah he makes GOOD use of the Pentatonic scales but thats what he likes. People are always trashing him because he would be nothing if Ozzy didn't meet him but honestly I think Ozzy is holding him Back. Rakie you are a very intelligent person I am glad we can talk! This has been very interesting! I don't feel that Yngwie or Rob lack emotion in their pieces. Many people say this because it's all about speed but really it is supposed to create different emotions all at once. I love shreading but Don't get me wrong thats not all I like.

My favorite guitarists would have to be eddie van halen, synyster gates and robert marcello. I'll also throw dime in even tho its top three. the guitarists i chose arnt neccasarily the best but hav imo the most style and write great music. im not a big malmsteen fan, cus imo he doesnt hav much style. other influences of mine include slash, dave mustaine (dont think hes that great of a guitarist, but he wirtes some killer riffs) and john petrucci.

Feeling pretty bad right now. Completely forgot Dime and I don't know how. I grew up listening to him shred in Pantera :headbang2

As I was reading through this thread, I was wondering why he wasn't meantioned earlier. I am supprised that it took 16 posts before he came up.

For me, I would say:
Dimebag, Kirk Hammett, and Zakk Wylde.

I'm not a musician, though. I hope you don't mind me posting in your thread.

1. Hendrix- most soulful, inspiring player ever
2. John Frusciante- not so much with the newer Chili Peppers stuff, bet early on with this band he ripped. Also his solo projects are all amazing especially this albulm called "Automatic Writing" he did with a band called Ataxia...AWESOME :headbang2
3. Prince- just bad@$$. People overlook him because of his flamboyant style but he is an amazing musician.

Its hard to pick a top 3 but others I like are George Harrison, SRV, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Johnny Marr formally of the Smiths but now with Modest Mouse, Wes Montgomery, and i could go on with this list forever but this is enough to start a flame war.:D

though im not much of a hendrix fan, frusciante and prince are fricken awesome:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

i took lessons back when i was young, the teachers would get frusterated because i played so good by ear, they would teach me a song from some kind of tab and i was always having to point out that something was missing, then i would just figure it out and play it for them and their like what the hell, ive been playin that wrong.no not all teachers are this way,can you imagine, but their is something powerfull about playin so naturaly by ear and then also learning the notes and formulas.some of my freinds played stif as a board with no rhythm but they knew all the notes,i feel very blessed to have the whole package.unfortunatly i dont do much with it.always to busy.i would like to take clasical lessons on guitar and piano.i play piano,g ,bass and a little drums.guitar for ever though so maybee i should stay focused huh.Their is something funny about those super players that never seem to have the same band, and on the album covers all you see is them, funny how lead solos kind of faded away, especialy for metallica. The thing i like about zach is in his solos he goes deep alot and takes you realy high then digs low again, mixs it up well,if you know an audience well, like srv said you can take them up and down,a little higher each time and then the big climax and then if it runs into the crowds favorite song they got you by the you know whats.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,someone shut me up,this stuffs in my veins,i feel bad for ppl who love music but dont learn an instrument.thanks you guys for this topic, yes ive had some drinks tonight and i will now shut it:ROFL::cheers::cool-1::headshake:mr-t::ROFL:

hey you know what ,i saw prince live a few years ago and he did so much guitar stuff and rocked the crowed,i listen to alot of funk and soul, didnt know he played all his stuff,it was freakin amazing.
