My 180g south american tank- setup thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Nick nice pick-up:headbang2!!!! I would use some epoxy--The quick set stuff--To fill that chip. How deep is it? If you're not gonna use that hole epoxy right up to the hole and let it dry over night. Then silicone over that and let dry. You should be fine.. When I fixed my 180 I put about 125 gallons of water in it after the silicone dried. I marked the water level and I let the tank sit in the back of my truck overnight--no leaks:headbang2... It's been up and running for 5 months or so no problems..

Good luck and keep me posted--If you need help I'll help just let me know.

Take care bro,
Chris

Thanks Chris, but I guess I should have mad it a little clearer, its a chip but not a complete one because the glass is still there, its not very deep at all, so I am just going to leave it.

One a different note, I ordered the cfs 500.

Good choice on the mag 12. Love the Danner pumps. Question, you get a good deal you can share with us on the ceramic media ^^^ up there?

Do you mean where I got them or what I'm doing with them? I got them from fishtankfactory, its a little less than 20lbs (cause I used some in a different filter.
For use, I'm going to do like Jose did with his, just and open sump with Micron socks and a tray of ceramic rings. Plus I'm going to try something with containered scrubbies.
Ya I really like the danner pumps too, and I had a 10% off at bigals.

Looks to me like a typical "scallop" chip. They're not great to look at obviously but if you fill it with either epoxy as others suggested (I know JB Weld makes a marine grade 2 part epoxy but I never used it yet-supposedly it works great and if it's anything like their other epoxies they're awesome) and then touch up the paint you shouldn't even see it along with the bulkhead capped. I would say it looks like you will be okay. Will be watching to see the rest and see the stock go in
When I get a minute I'll go outside to my truck and check out what the JB Weld says about glass.I originally bought it to repair a cracked rib in a canoe.

JB Weld marine grade epoxy says, it fills and bonds to most surfaces, iron, steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, pewter, all woods and ceramics. nothing at all about glass on here...:irked: However, it does say it is not affected by water, oil, petrol or chemicals??? Maybe you can give them a call and ask about the "JB Weld marine weld" 1-800-529-3530
I would assume it would work??? Then again who knows? Only reason I say use the epoxy over the silicone is the strength. silicone will pretty much just patch it. epoxy turns it harder than steel.

^ agree on the epoxy, peace of mind. Hey Nick PM Zennzzo. He was (I believe) a Navy guy and knows a product that works really well, I remember him posting about a while back. I just don't remember what it was. Ben will set you straight he is a good guy. ;)

Thanks, the only thing is that it painted now. Would i really need to pack over it if the glass chip won't come out, it still secure in there, i even tried picking at it a little? i am thinking it should be fine, i've had worse chips before in another tank and it held water just fine.

Here is an update, tank is in place, with the styro underneath it. Today i'm going to get some plumbing, might have it plumbed by the end of today.
