my 220, turtles and caiman

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really like the set up on the big tank and your caiman and turtles are awesome looking!

thanks! the first turtle is an alligator snapping turtle... the second one is just a normal red ear slider (came with snapper) with the snapper it is important to have the water low enough where they can just reach with their necks or they will drown... I had one get stuck under a rock before and drown :(

How do you feel about keeping RES with Crocoldilans secifically the Spectacled Caiman?

well actually on friday I had my res with my caiman... the biggest issue is not the caiman attacking the turtle but in fact red ear sliders (along with other sliders, map turtles, etc.)

will nip at the caimans toes and tail... my res tried that with my caiman.. he was crawling on him and ticking my caiman off... the caiman was hissing like crazy :headbang2 :D and the turtle spotted the toes started heading for them but I grabbed him and set up the extra tank... now if you keep the animals fed good and the size isn't extreme (caiman can eat turtles) but another thing is if you do try to keep them together... seperate them with food because if they both go after the food caimans (along with any other crocodilian) won't hesitate to bite the turtles head...

good luck... :D
thanks for the comments...

oh yeah, see you know crocodiles and alligators (caimans also) the jaw structure is different crocodiles have weaker jaw pressure but bigger teeth to tackle large prey hold on and death roll chuncks of meat off.... members of the alligator and caiman family will eat mammilian prey along with anything else but alligators especialy have jaws made for crushing ... that is why they are wide and have small teeth... they are designed (mainly gators) to eat turtles.. that is where the size difference really comes into play... they also have strong jaw pressure then crocodiles (and the strongest of any living and dead animal except for the t-rex) which I believe is 3,000lbs per square inch which is like a truck falling on you...

now I got nailed by my 3ft. gator and DON"T want it to happen again...:D

Hmm, I've seen them housed together and I think I'll take your advice and seperate them at feeding.

Btw, do you have any aditional lighting and if so what?

Thanks for helping out. :)

no problem... well on lighting, I have some heat bulbs on my tank.... On my species of crocodilan they are not out in the sun to much and therefore don't really need a uvb bulb but scientists, zoologists, etc. don't even no if they need one or not... but I got one anyway (just in case)... I would recomend a heat bulb and a uvb for your species of caiman... because specs. are always out in the sun... by the way where are you looking to get your caiman?

thanks for the comments...
