LOLZ!! great job with the tank!! ive seen all of the vids on youtube before. i wish i could get a 600, my biggest tank is a 100. though once i move out ill be putting up a thread entitled "3000 gallon turtle pond, INDOOR!!!"

when i move out ill be doing a project simular to this guys on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ciDMF7o0HE

i watched all of the parts for like 2 hours.

what all do u have to add the the reverse osmosis water before you put it into the tank?

LOL, yeah, but at least you got all the back story that goes with it! It's a lot more cohesive that way. :) And hey, I started with guppies in a 10 gallon tank. Everyone starts somewhere. It has taken us 7 years of fish keeping as a team (so 14 between the two of us) to get this far.

Studying everyone else's projects is a great way to learn what to do and what not to do. Standing on the shoulders of giants is a great way to look big and awesome. LOL

Im in love and the tanks not bad either!!! Just kidding looks awesome!!
Thank you darling, but you will unfortunately have to stick with loving the tank. I'm happily married woman. But you are of course welcome to drool over the tank if you'd like. :D

It's a tap/ R/O mix. There is a whole explanation in the other thread I listed on the first page. Water is monitored all the time. I make my own water to keep the pH around 6.8 and the GH down. (I've got the mixture down, but forget the exact number ATM). When I do a water change, I get the temp, pH, and GH all set before I add in the new water using the mixing barrel and pumps. And yes, the bioload is huge on this tank and requires 50% water changes almost weekly to keep the nitrates in check.

It's about 50/50 tap/ R/O water. I put in prime to dechlorinate the tap, acid to bring down the pH, and hot water (part of the tap portion) to get the temp correct. :)

40 pages before I found this lol.

LOL Sorry, but at least you have the whole story. As I've told others who have done the same thing, everything makes so much more sense when you have all the info. I did this for people to quickly browse through, but a lot of questions can be answered by the other thread. And look! You didn't have a single question for me now did you? :D

SUHWEEEEET setup!
looks like R1's tak was put to good use!:headbang2

I'm enjoy it with these big guys now, but when they move out, it will be a totally different tank. My big fire eels will be going in along with Dats and orinos (hopefully grown out more), flag tails, and some smaller sized catfish. I think it will be a beautiful tank. But, can't worry about that till we have a large pond up and running.

Okay guys, this is a picture thread. If you have questions or concerns, I'd appreciate if you would read my other thread that contains a lot of information about what actually goes on around here, before making assumptions that I am an irresponsible fish keeper. The link is in my signature. Without information, why do you accuse me of gorging my fish on a daily basis??? *** Also, please reference a study showing that this has been proven to be healthier than smaller daily meals.+++

If you read the thread with the whole story, you will see that this:

refers to the just first night of introducing the new ID...

and this:

refers to the night I introduced my peacock bass.

So, if you read the other thread with all the story behind this, you will know when I talk about "last night" you will know that I introduced peacock bass. I do not gorge or power feed my fish normally. This is just how an introduction works with these guys. Feeding smaller amounts daily not only keeps down aggression, but helps the biofiltration to be at a steady level. Giant feedings once a week would lead to a huge ammonia spike. I also find that with a giant feeding these cats are more likely to puke, which would again cause an ammonia spike. If they randomly steal someone's food like the TSN did the other day (see the ONE picture I have of him with a giant belly) there is nothing I can do, and it rarely happens. If I feel that I need bulk, I feed a fillet of tilapia which has a lot of water weight rather than just throwing in more calorie dense foods such as massivore. Also, by doing smaller, daily feedings, these cats stay very active rather than laying bloated on the sand.

Calm down, I never accused or assumed anything. I was merely stating "IF" you or someone overfeeds that it is not healthy for the fish. I congradulated you and was merely trying to help you and your fish, so if you don't want help then I'm outa here.

Why couldn't you just have said, " Thanks for caring and the help but I don't overfeed my fish."

I swear, you try and help people on this forum and they get defensive. :screwy:

Explanation of filtration...
3 overflow openings drop down to two inlets into the sump where the water is first filtered by two very large socks:

IMG_7247.jpg

I have some wood at the bottom to get it the filtration seeded, and I've left it in there for now until I use it in another tank. I have my 800 watt titanium heater and separate control down here. I also measure the temp of the water down here as I've already had my cats eat a glass thermometer once, get lucky, and puke it up whole. I stuck it in there, turned my back for 5 seconds, and it was gone. No more thermometers in the tank ever again.

The sump is drilled and plumbed for two pumps, but I only have one going. It could be used for either an extra tank, for more filtration, etc. I have a large fine filter pad in there which is obviously doing its job. Two very good reasons I keep it in there: 1) in case socks fill up or fall and potential dump stirred up sand into the pump. 2) It gets gross and this stuff would otherwise end up in my sand but more importantly in my canister filter. Since it can get expensive to replace these, I opt to give it as long of life as possible.
IMG_7248.jpg

So, then from the pump, it goes to the sand filter and canister. The sand filter and canister can be by passed and the water can be returned to the sump or it can be pumped back into the tank.
Going to sand filter:

Passing filtration:

Full filtration running and returning to tank (there is a ball valve behind the plastic forcing the water up):
IMG_7255.jpg

Full filtration running but returning to sump/ by passing tank:

Sand filter running but canister filter by passed:
IMG_7257.jpg

Sand filter needs to be backwashed for cleaning so all water is directed out the back of the sand filter, out the blue hose, and out into the back alley:
IMG_7258.jpg

The return for the sump so I can keep the filter going but not have it flowing through the tank:

And the ever so important, "you screwed up" sump overflow!:

So, I was given a pair of pbass, and it turns out they were large enough to go into the 600 with the big kitties. The female is showing some nice colors, but I think the male will need some TLC before his colors are going to come around. They were in with another pair, and from what I understand the other male was dominating the tank. He has some HITH, so I think he has a ways to go before he's 100%. I think just not getting whomped on will help him, but I also fed them some shrimp stuffed with medicated food last night. It will be interesting to see where he's at over the next couple weeks and months. They appear to be enjoying their new home tremendously, seem very relaxed, and are very interested in people.

Here are a few pics from last night a couple hours after the move (and no they aren't great, but they're photos) :

The male... I'll post updated photos in a couple weeks to see how he is progressing.

And here is a very fat TSN who ate not only her share of the large pre-introduction dinner, but also the hybrid's share of the tilapia. So if she is about 26-27", how big do you figure that belly to be?

And not to be left out, my hybrid wondering why I wasn't focusing on him...

Wow Jenn:eek: Great write up and much envy for your effort. The filtration system setup looks crazy and it's like a work of art! Also your cats look very happy and healthy, also nice that you added some Pbass's:) I'd suggest adding a Arowana and your tank would be set;) Anyways keep up the good work:thumbsup:

Very nice! It's good to have some Pbass in there in remembrance of Joey (R1_Ridah), lol.

Ben, I'm still alive bro :(.............................

Wowo Jen, this thread brings many emotions. First it's all smiles :D when I see that it went to a great home. Then it's tears  from missing it...... In a few weeks I will be over Freddy's, perhaps after I can swing by again and do another shoot. Got my new camera so I'm itching to take pictures.

BTW - love the post it's... :headbang2
