My attempt at a "home made" fish pellet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
egg, beefheart and corn starch all act as binders. the corn starch id the only ingredient I add specifically for a binder

Why not use dried shrimp shells instead of the krill? Peel the shrimp and use the meat too of course, but dry out the shell and make it into a powder. I assume it would help with the reds and oranges in the color of the fish like the krill would and be ALOT cheaper!

If i were to make the pellet cheap i'd simply go with:

frozen salmon (Protien and pigmentation) - frozen talipia
frozen beefheart (protien) - shrimp
frozen peas (aid in digestion) - same
hardboiled egg (all sorts of nutrients) - same
dried crickets (pigmentaion and other stuff) - you have the protein and stuff for pigmentation maybe you should perhaps add earthworms if you want something else in it
dried krill (same as above) - shrimp shell
fish oil (omegas and other vitamins) - yes add that
spirulina powder (all around wonder food) - also add this
garlic (anti parasite) - same (just not too much or else it'll smell really wierd)
cornstarch (binder) - need this

should run quite a bit cheaper then the original formula.

for a vegatable one you could go with peas, carrots, nuts (a little protein for it) the fishoil, spirula and cornstarch as the binder again.

maybe tommarow i'll try and make a few pellets!!! I'm thinking for mine i'll go earthworms, a few crickets, frozen bloodworms/mysis shrimp/shrimp/tilipia peas and cornmeal and i'll see how it works out.

i'd get it but my oscar is only about 3" long and my dempsey is about 4 so i think they're a bit too small for your pellet. It sounds very good though.

smaller pellets are possible but I haven't made any. the batch I just made doesn't break up easily but they are too dried out. Also I'm not 100% sure but I think tilapia contains thiaminase where salmon doesn't. Also salmon is higher in most nutrients and vitamins and has alot more pigment enhancing capabilities.

I have fed all of my aro's a diet consisting mainly of frozen krill and tthe colors I get are amazing. I will keep krill in my food. It has alot more carotene. thanks for the suggestions though.

from a google search i didn't come up with tilapia having thiaminase.

salmon is more nutritious, although tilapia has more omega 3's in it. really i think you've got protein covered pretty damn well so maybe you can just cut back on the amount of salmon used?

it's very possible. I will look into it. I got the salmon fillets for pretty cheap. thanks for the research

WELL GUY I TRIED TO SAVE MONEY AND PROTEIN FOR YOU TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE

Dover Sole (Protein)6.99lb
Whole Squid(Color Pigment)1.99lb
Spinich(Digestion+Color)
HardBoiled Eggs
Fresh Cyclops (Instead Of crickets)
Freeze-Dried Daphnia (Instad Of Krill)
Fish Oil
Cyclopeze Powder
Garlic
Cornstarch

Sole IS very High In Omega's and Is very healthy
Whole Squid HAs MANY color pigments and is cheap cheap cheap
Spinich Is cheaper then peas and Has alot more digestion Power
Cyclops Is Really More nutricous then Crickets
Daphnia is cheaper and there is more "creatures" In smaller amounts
Cyclopeeze Powder IS the Highest Known Substance Of Protein and color

I estimate around $1.73/oz
