I put him down yesterday. He was barely breathing and was just looking more and more stressed. When I pulled him out of the water he didn't flop or twitch. I'm sure his back was broken. He's now in the freezer. 
clove oil? It seems it was better thing to do for the poor guy in the end. Im sure you did the right thing and you sure tried

Sorry to hear you had to put him down. Sucks losing any fish let alone one you've become very attached too. I'm sure you did the best thing for him.
