My brother wants a turtle.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Took me 7 years and an international move, but I got a snake haha. Although I started nagging when I was 4, where was his ambition? I don't want to be snobby or elitist, but a turtle is not a pet for a 12 year old
I try telling him this. I told him he should do a terrarium with maybe a little bit of water at the bottom for a few small fish to start out with but he wants to dive in head first!

at least he's got the ambition to thrive and get into the hobby which is great!!
Yeah, but he wants to rush. Which isn’t good. I tried and now I’m stuck with fish I’m not happy with. That’s why I’m changing half my stock soon. Because I rushed and should not have.

Ambition and blind wants are not the same..

Get him to help you with fish tank maintenance, see how much he likes that

Yeah, Koltons being a good bro. Your in the right place, you will get great advice here. Everyone is very helpful. It took me a couple years to realize if advice is given and it’s not what I wanted to hear, I would convince myself I was right. I could have avoided a lot of problems if I had listened. Good luck on whatever you guys do, be prepared Kolton to step in and have another pet of your own if you go this route. Pick something your brother would like, but at the end of the day plan on it being your responsibility.

I think the diamondback terrapin is a great suggestion. It’s not a “common” turtle, like a slider. It might not look mean like a snapper, but they are beautiful.

If he wants an active, always on the go, interactive turtle... I’d suggest an african sideneck. My male will rush the glass and flop around bagging for food anytime you pass the tank. Lol If I give him fry he will go crazy chasing them. Worms are his number one favorite though. Haha.
Having him help you with your tanks is also a great idea. I made my daughter help with our cats before we got her a pet bird. She had to show she could be responsible for feeding and maintenance for our current animals before being trusted with one of her own.
