My Convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there are 6 fry left as far as my last count,

I took some pictures tonight, they are getting ready to spawn again.

The female has almost no caudal fin left. But her appetite is good, maybe it will grow back...

Pics will be up soon

Here is the female after the male roughed her up. Convicts can be very violent.

I am assuming the male was ready to spawn and the female was still caring for fry.

The entire episode happened in the course of < 24 hrs. At night they were fine, the next night when I got home from work the female was hiding behind the filter intake.

The damage is pretty significant but I do not believe it is life threatening.

There is zero aggression between them at this time.

I expect her pectoral fin to make a full recovery, I dont think that the tail fin will grow back, but I am hoping.

Her right side has very minimal damage, you can see the caudal fin was destroyed to the base:

Her left side is missing / has damaged scales, the pectoral fin has some pretty severe damage:

I will try to get some good pics of the few remaining fry. They are small and stay hidden (which is probably why they are still alive)

Get some melafix for that fin. It should grow back.

I will give it a shot, do you reccommend dosing every day for 7 days as advertised on the bottle?

Seems like 5 tsp a day is alot.

Do you typically continue to dose until the fin is completely healed, or just for the first couple of weeks.

I never used melafix, Ive only heard ppl opinions. I wouldnt use it but in your case i would. Dont want that fin to Rot.

Wow, I just did some reading on fin rot, hopefully there isnt a bacterial or fungal infection there,

The stub does have a white edge on it, I just figured it was trying to heal. Thanks for the heads up.

Pulled the activated carbon and started treating with Melafix. I can't imagine her caudal fin is going to grow back, but maybe there is a small chance.

I took some pics of the fry but they turned out poorly.

Stay tuned.

Update time:

I did my typical 50% weekly WC today and will run another 7 day treatment of Melafix. I think it is helping the scale and pectoral fin damage, and possibly the tail fin damage although it is early to tell.

Here is a pic taken tonight, her scales are mostly grown back, her pectoral fin is beginning to heal. Her tail fin is still a stub, sorry for the poor quality she was not very photogenic tonight:

The male allowed me to get some good shots:
