Update:
The eggs have hatched, the female has moved the wrigglers to a hard to reach spot, it was hard to get any pictures of her healing process but I got some decent ones.
I can't be certain how much of the credit goes to the Melafix and how much goes to luck or a good diet or good water params. But I know for certain that I will use Melafix any time I have an injured fish, cause I didn't think it was possible for the tail to heal as much as it has.

As you can see the top half or so was removed about 1/3 to the base
