I was wanting to go with lower light plants and light fixture for budget reasons and because I was thinking that piranha prefer lower light. What would you recommend for lighting? I don't want to mess with MH or high pressure sodium, but would spring for t5 or similar if it would work better.

Wish the price of the new LED technology would come down, would make the energy cost and heat dissipation feasible for just about any light output you want.

the light required by plants is very different that what we see with human eye.
what looks bright to you may not produce enough PAR for plants.
Here're some charts measured using PAR meter so you get an idea what light will be good for your tank and plants. use these as reference as different plant will be at different distance from your light.

Thanks for the plant info. I was not saying you asked repeat questions. LoL It was a backhanded comment that, as a parent hooked on fish keeping, I used my daughters repeated requests for her own tank as an excuse to involve her more in fish keeping and add another tank to the house.:)

Funny how even though I only answer to myself I still find excuses to justify what I want to do.:screwy:

ha no problem on the advice but ill take your advice and see what happens..maybe but that last part is funny:)

Thank you, that helped a lot. Looks like a T5 HO two bulb would cover what I have in mind.

i have a 180gal with 4 medium amazon sword plants,1 big piece of driftwood and i house 12 red bellies

Piranhas are illegal in Florida.

Happy girl at my house today. 10 baby prianha showed up with Fed-Ex. Will have to start planning how to rearrange our available fish housing options or re-home some eventually. I am thinking an Indore pond for the CA/SA chichlids would solve the problem.

On a side note I had some sticker shock on my first time having fish shipped. Cost almost as much as the fish!

congras on the new fish. where did you order the fish from?

Thanks. I got them from Aqua Scape Online. Fish were well packaged and arrived in great shape. I think shipping was about 14 hours door to door, just had no idea shipping costs so much.

I guess you got the 2" special? 10 for $80, Pedro is running a shipping special on pfury, $35 is that how much you paid?
