Were u running a heater? Or was the heat surge from another piece of equipment? Ive had sand get stuck in propellers of pumps and filters causing them to run "hotter" than normal. And was ur tank on an auto drip? Auto drip is what i mean by full proof system. Too many factors can and will go wrong over time with equipment/pumps/filters... and the constant supply of fresh water can be life or death when ur not home. Not being rude as ive experienced the same scenario as u, just saying i believe auto drip is the closest way to be extra safe.

Heater was running to keep temp stable nothing else. Thats why maybe a surge could have effected the heater?

I agree, I would think an oxygen problem as well, considering how fast the deaths happenned, and with the other fish being alright .... so sorry man .... more experience under the belt, and you'll always remember those 2 as will we all ... still sucks, but look on the bright side . .. like I said before they'll be around again
