Yeah I've heard a lot about how catfish are flighty when their whiskers touch the glass. But the one at my LFS is 20"+ and is kept in a 7'x2' and does just fine. Not flighty or skittish at all.
There are always exceptions to each rule... or one plausible explanation is that with constant human traffic, he does not spook anymore as this is the norm for him now. Spooking reaction usually occurs when there was nothing going on outside the tank for a long time and then "suddenly" something happens or someone appears.
I just negoticated a price to purchase my achara back from the store I gave it to. :-D Now to get a large enough diameter tub to house him in...... any suggestions? No kiddie pools.
You like doing things backwards, don't you?Just teasing
No one bought it from the LFS despite your advertizing efforts? 300 gal Rubbermade tub could be ok for it, but really I'd think an inflatable (in the basement or something) would be better, a 10' diameter x 3' deep.
