My first Cichla...what type is it?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will add this because I don't see the tell tell sign of the hard strip down the middle rear of this cichla I would say Ocellaris. Most Mono have that deep thick strip at the base of there tail extending itno the body of the cichla ending at the third bar. But do to the fact that within the hour the cichla can show different features this may not be accurate for ID. Does it display a thick bar lateral to the stripe's ending at the third stripe? (most likely outlined with an irradecent/bright yellow).

no, i dont see any marking like that on this guy. all he has is the 3 spots on the body and the tail spot...

just to be sure, this is the part you referring to right? i wouldnt call it a stripe, looks to be just some blotchy marking

Correct! A very thick stripe outlined with intense yellow= Mono. A stripe not so pronunced with no yellow= Ocellaris. So I think Ocellaris. Imo. Ok so that may be more confusing but just a observation I have made. LOL.

very nice...

thx man, yeah that makes sense. a lot of the little monos that i see online have that thick lateral stripe from bar to tail. i know its not 100% accurate, but it helps.
