Oh I understand now. since your kit lens' aperture range is listed at f3.5-5.6. When your lens is as wide as possible it will shoot at the full aperture potential of the lens. But when you zoom past a certain point (not sure what that is on your cam. I have Canon) your lens can no longer use that wide of an aperture so it jumps to f5.6.
What happens when you bump your iso again?
Oh, okay, thanks for the info. I tried raising the iso, but it just made the pictures come out really pixelated (I already had it at 800, but tried raising it to 1600).

I'll try again tonight and see if I can do any better now.

wow great job, once you get a speedlight, you have more options. i usually shoot fish at 1/200th 100 iso f9 with a speedlight

Yeah, I'm not sure when I'm going to have the money for one though. I think I'll probably wait a while before spending another large amount of money on camera equipment, but I definitely plan on getting a speedlight sometime in the future (especially after reading some of jcardona's posts in your thread).

yep, i felt the same way, i had to wait a while to save up for mine, but it is a great purchase, once you have a zoom lens and a speedlight, i believe you can take amazing pictures ANYWHERE anytime :)

Now that I'm finally getting used to using my d3000, I figured I'd post some pics using it and some using my old cam, just for comparison.
