Yup loads on my archer fish, which only cruises the surface. But he is now in another tank of mine, where no one will bother him :)

not necessarily. Lots of pygos are kept solo. In fact a lot of pirayas are kept this way. My only concern for the P is the water parameters. African cichlids need liquid basic brick, and p's need soft acidic. My prediction is that this dude gets about 4-6" and kills your favorite fish (or fishes), then it's off to the LFS, or to another tank. Lots of people feed cichlids to their P's as part of their regular diet.

Couldn't agree more with Diogenes, HrHagel I don't mean to wind you up but I don't think that fish combo would end up well, you're keeping different kind of fish with different water needs, not to say that the piranha must not be kept along with any other fish.

Pygos can only be kept with pygos and not because they just "like" to be with pygos, it is just they tolerate each other better.

You might think we don't know about your fish and in fact you might think we don't know what we're talking about as you might also think just because you have "successfully" kept this fish combo for some little time it's gonna work forever.

As you where told, that piranha is gonna grow and it's gonna be a point in where that piranha is going to take your fish down little by little,(if some don't die before due to their different water needs) the only reason why it hasn't happened yet it's because the piranha is little, just wait and you'll see.

I appreciate and respect you guys input, so by all means don't wrap it up in lollipops for me, i'm a grown man :)

I understand your writing and meaning completely, and i actually knew most of what you guys are saying before aquiring this fish.

The problem i'm facing, is that every time i've posted pics of fish along the way to it's current state, and long before i joined mfk, i was always told "A few weeks and this and that fish will be dead" "this won't work for long"
Well it has been going for 1½ years now, with the only damage so far, even with several pairs breeding in there, is the fin nipping from the Piranha, which is only miniscule still, due to his small size, and the fish he was targeting only cruised the surface, which is attracting to predators, and now that he is removed from the tank, i'm going to wait it out and actually see what happens before i start taking any drastic measures, since none of the predictions ever came true before.

And please don't think i'm in a state of denial, cause i definatly am not, but if you don't mind i'm going to see how this works out for me, and not go by a writing of someone who knows someone, who saw something.

Has any of you guys actually tried a similar setup?

This tank is more peacefull than my community beginners tank was 13 years ago.

Thanks :)

The piranha is a juvenile, they tend to feed on fins and scales of other fish at this age. As it grows it will definitely attack the other fish because that's what they do. I recall you saying that this 'experiment' has been going on for 18 months, if so, that piranha should be around 7 inches and not have any juvenile spots, as your's shows. I may have mis-read your post so can you confirm. One other thing, do you think it fair to put a bunch of living creatures in an environment such as yours?

The piranha has only been in there for 1 week or so by now.

And yes, i think it's just as fair to do a setup like mine, just as any other setup with same type cichlids, as long as it doesn't cause any unusual stress or damage, which so far it hasn't.

You guys have gone into overkill with the warnings. Time to ease up on them. You can pump up your chest and say i told you so later....or possibly give him credit later.

I'm as confused as the guy in the previous posts. You've been having predictions not come true for a year and a half but you've only had yoiur piranha for 2 weeks? So the predictions were about your other mix then? What were they saying wouldn't work?

'Overkill' I don't think so. As we now know that the young piranha has only been in the tank 2 weeks, and it has already been chomping his fish. It would be great if piranhas would co-exist with other fish, but sadly it has never worked, not with home sized aquaria any way.

Yes, predictions of when i added breeding pairs of cichlids from different continents, etc. Which is working perfectly fine.
