My fish are dying and I don't know why!

I Agree you can't have 0ppm of nitrates. And if you clean your media every 2 wks that's not enough time to get good bacteria to grow. Also when you test did you shake the bottles for the test? My buddy didn't shake the bottles and his tests showed low to no ppm. Test ammonia if it's high or you have any then you know the bacteria is the problem.

I agree, there must be nitrates in a cycled tank. I keep two filters on all my tanks and only clean them like twice a year, and I clean one, wait a few weeks and clean the other to get as much bacteria scrubbing the water as possible

.... I don't think we have copper pipes but I'm not sure.
not only pipes, but storage unit, etc. basically the whole water route,.. sitting is different than always running through it.
It sounds like there's some BB issue, but I always figure there can be more than 1 thing at same time. and combinations are always more damaging.
Murphy's Law found my name & address before.

If your water parameters are reading 0 nitrates then your tank isn't cycled or you killed off the cycle by doing too many water changes...

That is immposible unless non treated water is added when doing a wc! BB wont die from dechlor tap no matter how much water is changed And the op and i have been over that!

Hes wondering why small fish are dying and he has 4 crayfish???! Id say their prlly killing ur stock, regardless ammonia/nitrites are 0ppm! just my opinion but i believe there are some compatibility issues occuring!

Somethings not right.

I'll check into the water system. I hope its not that! As for the nitrates, yes it is possible for me to have 0ppm nitrates. This same test kit tested high nitrates in my 150 gallon, due to some bad driftwood, and went back to normal after I removed the wood. This isn't the first time I've had 0 ppm Nitrate readings on my tanks before. I'll test the water now and take pictures for you :) Also when I say I clean the filters every 2 weeks, I mean that one filter gets the media swished in old tank water just to get the large clumps of stuff off them, then 2 weeks later the other filter gets its media swished. I don't thoroughly clean them, definitely not enough to kill the bacteria.

Depends what kind of maintenance he is doing on each water change. If he's cleaning his filters and gravel vaccing everytime then possibly could of killed off his cycle. Even if he dechlorinates his water prime/safe isn't instant especially if he's adding the tap water straight into his tank then priming it. Takes a bit of time for the conditioner to remove the chlorine/chloramines.

When I said I clean the filter media every 2 weeks what I meant was that every two weeks ONE of the filters has its media swished in old tank water. This is only to clear off the large clumps of junk. I don't rinse it really well or anything to kill it all off. Basically each filter gets a light cleaning once a month. Sorry I should have been more clear about that earlier. It is possible to have water with 0ppm Nitrates. I do on a regular basis. I have one tank that does get a nitrate reading so I know the test kit is working properly. I do shake the test bottles vigorously before using them.

Here is the picture I promised.
