My fish are dying and I don't know why!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how are the crayfish? invertibrates are usually the first to die when water quality issues are occuring. i would not use salt at all with the eel. pictures of your remaining fish might give a better clue to whats going on other then the flashing. how deepmis the sand and how long has it been in the tank?

ime the eel and the crays would be the first to go...if it was your regular water quality or run of the mill ick/ parasite infestation.

The crayfish and eel are doing fine actually. It's just the other fish that are not doing well. I can see the little white spots on them so I know it's ich. Should I just treat with heat?

I'm with the posters asking about 0 nitrates. In a FW tank, even with frequent water changes, you SHOULD have some nitrates. You. WANT to see some nitrates. It means your cycle is healthy and functioning. Unless you have a heavily planted tank, you should have a reading.

How old are your test kits? Maybe take your tank and tap water to the LFS and have them test it to give yourself a check and balance for your kits.

I used a brand new test kit. I bought a new test kit because my old one was testing 0ppm for nitrates. It's not the test. I certainly can take my water to the LFS and have them test it. Then I'd know for sure if it was my test kit. The tank is not heavily planted but does have a couple of small plants. I'll be happy when this is over. Thank you guys for all your help.

Pls realize when you raise the temp it will speed up the life cycle of the ick before killing it. I raised my heat to 86 and lost 12 fish within a day. Best is to do salt uv filter and heat.

I would usually use heat and salt but can't use salt in this situation because of the eel. Hopefully I won't lose anymore fish. Thanks :)

You keep your tank at 82 and had a random ich breakout? Ich usually only occurs when adding a new fish, or the fish are overly stressed. If I were you I would remove the crayfish and the eel, raise heat and add a commercial ich treatment, salt also works, not as fast, but works.

The gill flashing could be caused from columnaris as well. It often attacks the gills of fish and can be an internal infestation. Which patches from the size of a pixel up to the whole body can form on the fish.. these sometimes look like cotton. At high temps this actually thrives. If the fish were infected with a gill or internal version of the disease they could be dying apparently at random. I currently have a problem with this so I thought I would bring it up. If the tank were re-cycling there would be a nitrite and ammonia reading.
