My fishlist for my 125 Central American Aggresive Biotope

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah i would take out the jacks and not add anything because there wont really be a "gap" to fill by their absence, the tank will still be overstocked, also you have to have either 1 pictus or 3, 2 will fight. and you want all the cichlids to be males or they may pair up and cause problems for you (though O gender doesnt really matter since they dont really interbreed with anything) Os are extremely messy fish and by having one you are seriously limiting what else you can put in the tank due to their bioload. and with that stock you will definitely have to do water changes AT LEAST once a week, every other week would definitely be too few and your bioload would be too high for that when they are all grown

ok so no oscar, do 3+ pictus and try to get all male or all female cichlids. i have done all the research i can do and still have questions. i thought that was what this forum was for... i am stuck with theese fish: the jacks, the blood parrot, the pictus, the toadfish, and the pleco. at the lfs they have the green terror with oscars and texans. and pictus with toadfish. and jacks with leoporinus and convicts. i know the owner of the lfs and he is a family friend. anything else...

You're going to do what you want regardless of what we tell you, so go ahead and do whatever the frik you want.. it's no skin off of my back if one of your fish gets eaten or killed.

sorry i am just way confused, one person says one thing and another says the opposite. after hearing what you have all said here is the new list: 1 leoporinus, 1 green terror, 2 jack dempseys( i have had them for over a year now and they have been fine), 1 convict cichlid, 1 toadfish( or not, while we where chatting this over the lfs sold theirs), 1-2 bristlenose plecos, 3+ pictus catfish, and 1-3 salvani cichlids. does that look good. since you pointed out that none of them are really aggresive would 1 green texas cichlis be ok? i just want one slightly larger cichlid in there... thnx

oh ya just thought i should point out i am new to this whole big tank mean *** fish( at least compared to what i am used to) i have done complex setups but not complex fish. also i thought i was doin good for this being my first monster tank and the fact i am barely a teen.

i would only do one salvini as you dont want a pair forming, salvinis are mean little SOBs so you will have to keep an eye on them, also you are going to be having 3 larger growing cichlids in there with the JDs and GT, carpintis get the same size as GTs but if your wanting one then your going to get one despite what we say, also IME JDs and carpintis don't get along very well since they have similar spangling. but you can always do what i did, i went in a little over my head in the beginning and had several different grow outs but now that they are all getting larger i have lowered my cichlids down to 4 and will probably have to lower it to 3 if anyone starts causing trouble as they get older, just grow out some different combinations and then remove trouble makers as they arise or choose which fish you like better and get rid of your lesser favorite ones. this isnt the best route since you cant always find homes and it took me a while to find homes for my extras since the new world cichlid scene around here is almost non-existent but if there is a good cichlid community near you then any extras should be easy enough to re-home

when working with cichlids, Confusion is the name of the game. I like your current list.....:headbang2

..... Just hope you can keep up with the bio-load.:(

from personal experience, my brother had an O, JD, and three Texans in a 55g Square ..... he moved the breeding pair of Texans, then the lone got beaten up... the female past on then he put them all back together and the three died of natural causes... together in relatively peaceful harmony...

pay attention to your tank in all your phases, I wish you luck!

its not "natural" causes when they die because of poor water quality when super overcrowded in a tank. but yes OP your bioload is going to be quite high, you will definitely not be able to slack on water changes at all and keep a close eye on nitrate levels

the water changes aren't going to be a problem for me i love doing them, i know i have issues. so only 1 salvini and i should be ok. the reason i keep metioning the same fish is because they are the ones the petstore carries or will order in for me. even though he is a family friend he is still strick on personal orders. for some of the fish you have recomended it would cost more than 100$ just for him to order, add in his personal price and its a 150$+ fish. the fish he can order or has are: pictus pim cats, gt's, oscars, jd's, firemouths, salvinis, texans, jaguars, convicts, blood parots, and the many dwarf cichlids. he also has the leoprinus and toadfish( or used to). anything else i should know???

ok just found out that his texans are the red texans and the green texans? which would be better? thnx.
