My Florida Gar 11+ years.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would do horrible things to be able to have a florida gar, but they can get rather large and unmanageable...and I still have to upgrade my tank size for what I have!!
I feel for you here bud. I saw a Florida gar in big Al's when I was 12 years old. I went in there monthly asking if they had gars for 4 straight years before I finally saw someone selling 3 on kijiji. After 4 years of waiting I finally got my gars!!

Yep, the gar is still going strong. I had a disease wipe out a bunch (large clown knife, 2 orino pbass, jag, osca) But the gar pulled through. He is enjoying the 180 with a jack dempsey. Thanks for the bump. I wish I would have had him in a larger tank from the beginning. I would say a 125 is the smallest. He really should be in a 240. But I have had him for over 16 years now.

Gar is finally going into a 96x32x26 tank from his 180. I'm sure he'll love the space. Hard to believe it's been 16yrs since i got him.

How great is it to see someone keep their fish 16 years? We'll done!

Great dimensions on the new tank.....

O

Thanks. I can't wait to get him in his new tank. it will just be him and a JD until I start adding some cichla and another gar.

That is amazing. I am getting a 14" one tomorrow. This thread really got me excited about it.

Ha, thx. Just moved the stand into my basement tonight for the new tank. I have to paint a wall before I put it into the final spot. Then, Sunday, the bigger tank will be in and on the stand. I measured the tank tonight, and it ended up being 96x30x25. So a little smaller, but still bigger than the 6x2x2 I have now.

Gar and JD are still doing well. Just been feeding on cichlid pellets. Adding a clown knife tomorrow, as well as doing a water change. I have noticed these little white "bugs" in small groups inside on the glass. No idea what they are, and they aren't on the fish.

Here's the new tank. I have the rest of the stand front. Just have to put it on. 96x30x25. 3 drains and 3 returns.
