The only thing that I have implied is that when one buys a FH, the new owner needs to follow a simple preventative protocol such as outlined above. Doing so is not wasting time, in most cases it could very well mean having a fish that is alive for years to come, or not. No need for a scope, in fact, attempting to correctly ID pathogens under a microscope is often best left to experts in that field. A well educated guess trumps death every time, and in the vast majority of these cases those educated guesses result in a positive outcome. In this case, my educated guess comes from first hand experience with keeping FH that were imported from Bangkok etc, and arrived packing heat. I cured them all, without the need for a microscope. I must just be good at guessing. lol

Levamisole is it safe for snails? I agree with you if I would have followed the preventive protocol I don't think my fish would have gotten sick I've definitely learned my lesson

I honestly have no idea, you might want to google that.

Looks like it is not some people say they have used it safely tho

I think a lot of people who say that Levamisole has harmed their fish .. or maybe their snails (not sure) ... they might be using a crazy high dose ... and maybe several doses. I've used it several times .. once at at least 4 ppm ... it never caused a problem.

Another reason it might cause a problem is because of toxins released from detritus worms. Levamiole will also kill those and most people who have them in their substrate might not know about the very small ones. They might release toxins immediately or there can be an ammonia spike if the water isn't changed and the gravel vacuumed within 24-48 hours.

If dosed at 2 ppm or 1/4 teaspoon per 100 gallons I believe it's safe.

Update on my Flowerhorn. I noticed a red dot under his mouth and i immediately thought of septicemia. So i ran to petsmart and bought a antibiotic which contained doxycyline hydrate in it. I poured directly 3 packages (30 gallons) into the tank. I put some pellets in the next day, but refused. I tried to cut little pieces of the thawed shrimps and threw it in. My flowerhorn didn't seem to be interested for 2 hours but then i saw him ate like crazy and he now has alot of appetite toward shrimps but not pellets. I believe he had bacterial infection not parasite. I might be wrong or it could be both since i treated with both medications (antibiotics and parasitic meds. I am still waiting for my levamisole to be delivered. Mean while i will continue to treat him full course of Doxycyline.

That' good that he is eating. You tried soaking the pellets in garlic guard?

I haven't tried the garlic yet. That would be something i would try to get him back on pellets tho. Thanks

Secondary bacterial infections in fish with hex is quite common, which is why I believe Clear contains an antibiotic (tetracycline?), along with a med designed for internal parasites. (most likely Metro) Things can get a little tricky when using a shotgun approach to treatment but the fact that it is eating again is always a positive sign. Just go easy with the food and allow his gastrointestinal system some time to recover. And for sure still use the Levamisole when it arrives.

Mike - that is exactly how/why people have killed their fish with Levamisole. For many years the vast majority of people on the WWW treated at 13 ppm, because they blindly followed this persons advice. http://inkmkr.com/Fish/CamallanusTreatment/TreatmentProcedure.html

Charles has a Ph.D, in chemistry, not any type of science that involves treating sick finfish. A lot of people have lost fish over the years following his treatment advice, and unfortunately his info is still found online and many people still post links to his info. Up until 2015 he was still selling Lev and other meds etc online.

I first posted about those OVER-dosage rates (13 ppm) posted by Charles et al 7 yrs ago when I first treated a FH that I owned with Levamisole.
