My fun for the night!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I filled that tank high enough for the intake to get water so i could leak test everything I did... got everything filled, and flipped on the pump. Much to my surprise, only one leak....stupid hose clamp i cant seem to get tight enough. I can handle that...spray bar works great, may enlarge a couple holes though, may not, who knows. What I dont like is how loud this damn pump is, im already about to disconnect it and take it back to the LFS I bought it from and shove it you know where...Other than that, no leaks from the canisters or my plumbing, I call it dumb luck, but hey, its better than no luck and way better than bad luck right. Ill toss in a couple more pictures before i drain and move it to its final resting place.

All plumbed ready to go

Those arent bulkheads, those are LED puck lights so i can see what im doin down there when the tank has substrate in it....I wish those were bulkheads, that wouldve made everything that much easier lol

paint the spray bar black

Im gonna paint it all black and vinyl cover the back glass, this was just a test run so i could check for leaks...This was my first time using any type of pvc to plumb stuff in so i was expecting the worst lol, only on leak though...Any ideas on how to quiet down a noisy pump other than buy a different pump?

Well went to hook everything back up after taking the inlet and spraybar out to paint...filled it up enough to start the pump cause i opened up the holes on my spraybar a little bigger, and low and behold, i see a drip under my pump...now im quite perplexed...wasnt leaking 3 days ago, hook it up and now its leaking, hmmm...so i get a closer look at what seems to be a crack that decided to form where my barb fitting screw into the outlet on the pump...WTF...now im on hold again till at least tuesday at the earliest...its driving me bonkers sitting here looking at this damn tank....UUUGGGHHHHH lol

Ok so after opening up the holes in the spraybar to 3/16th, the pressure is more tolerable and wont blow scales off fish...ran to the LFS and picked up another pump while im waiting on parts for my pump that cracked the housing :irked:...hooked up the new one, filled er up, works like a champ...super quiet too...I also tinted, no spray paint, the back glass with vinyl tint so i can change it whenever i want, looks pretty good...gonna run it through the night and check for leaks again tomorrow and if all is good ill start my cycle and hopefully get some fish in there soon (my CK's have been eyein their new home all night lol) I also tinted my glass tops to dim the light a little, gonna play with that as i go...heres some pics of the final product, as always, criticisms and opinions are always welcome :)

Your going to be happy with those filters. I have 7 of them. Nu-Clear are slightly easier to work on and a little better flow with the 1" lines. The cartridges are interchangeable.
Do you have ball valves from/to the tank. I saw you had extra filter cartridges. Mark the starting pressure on your first canister (this is the one that will clog) When the pressure doubles you will need to change out the cartridge, or when the spray bar flow just gets too slow. Simply turn off the pump, close the incoming and out going ball valves and hook a garden hose up to the drain on the first filter. Open the drain and run that hose out side. Open up the tiny plug on the lid to clear the vacuum and the water will drain in a minute. Open the canister top and swap out the cartridge. I don't clean anything inside the filter I just do a quick swap out. Old filter in a 5 gallon bucket new filter in the canister. tighten lid open one ball valve and watch water rise and slowley close off the tiny lid plug when the water reaches the top. Don't worry about a little air in the top. Open the other valve and turn on the pump all the time checking for leaks.
For the dirty filter, rinse it out with a hose outside then soak it in that 5 gallon bucket with a little bleach and water. After a day or so remove the cartridge and hose it off again and let dry so it's ready for the next filter change. My cartridges last years doing this.

It has been a while since I ran Ocean Clear canisters, but I always thought that you push the water through them, and not pull? You may find better results by moving the pump in front of the filters vice behind. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm working off memory of ~10 years ago?
