My fun for the night!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks great, pump noise will reduce great if you take the condensed form that comes in boxes square and place it under the pump it's self......
I still do not understand why people think these filters are bad.... they rock

thanks for the whole size on the spray bar

Thanks for the awesome info on these canister...really helpful since this is my first go around with them...although i do have a question..im using two, one with pot scrubbies and the other with the big filter...i have my pump throttled back to about 3/4 cause it keeps draining only that canister(with the big filter) over time...im half tempted to just take out the filter and fill it with pot scrubbies and filter pads...my question is, and someone else eluded to this a couple posts ago, do i have the pump in the wrong spot (pulling as oppoed to pushing the water) should i hook this up on my intake and push through the filters? It would keep the canister from draining for one and i could keep the big filter in...I have plenty of pump to push through if need be...arent these just sumps with screw on lids anyways? thanks for the comments guys, ya got me thinkin now lol...any clarification on the pump location (inlet side vs. outlet side) would be awesome..thanks

Pumps are made to push water.
You should be set up like this: Incoming 3/4" line (ocean clear) 1" line (Nu-Clear) from the tank to a valve. (I use true union valves so I can take the plumbing off the tank with out draining the whole tank if I need to do major maintenance in the back yard for example) From the valve next component is the pump then from the pump to the side of the canister filter. Out the canister from one of the bottom holes to the side of the next canister. Out the second canister to a true union valve and back into the tank.

I may have some pictures........

if you could post a pic or two that would be awesome...maybe thats my problem all together with my canister draining, hmmm

It has been a while since I ran Ocean Clear canisters, but I always thought that you push the water through them, and not pull? You may find better results by moving the pump in front of the filters vice behind. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm working off memory of ~10 years ago?

This is correct and I have had one of my Ocean Clear filters for 20 years now LOL It's my oldest piece of equipment.

Some pics:

Water from the tank goes into the pump first then into the canister (you can see I like unions lol)DSC_0641.JPG
And finally the return from the filter to the tank.

I have two separate canisters with their own pumps pushing water from the left side of the tank to the right side. Kind of like a river I guess. The canisters are closed loop so I can run the intakes and returns low in the tank where the poop is. I have a sump system on this tank too and that handles the bio load. My canisters are just set up for mechanical filtration (pooper scoopers) I hope this helps :)

You have to leave the big filter in or what's the point? You will just have a big power head pushing water around lol. You shouldn't have to throttle back your pump, as your filter clogs the flow will slow down until you change the filter. Your going to like your set up. It's top shelf all the way! Very easy to maintain.

You should try to increase the intake to 1" and the exhaust to 3/4 or even 1/2" that will help with the flow issue

ok now im all messed up...should i move the pump from the outlet to the inlet...or just redo my intake from 3/4 to 1" ? or hell, do both lol

I was saying that you should have the tank draining into the pump, into the filters, into the tank again.
