hi, im fairly sure its a spotted gar. You can tell by the size from tip of snout to eye vs. the size from the end of the gill cover to eye. If its over 2/3rds of the snout length long, youve got a silver.
I do realize that what i just wrote made very little sense, im going with spotted vs florida. If you post a pic with a clear eye and gill region, then we can tell for sure.

This technique does not work on Sub adult fish and questionably works on any captive fish.

We have went over hundreds of Wild, hobby and preserved Oculatus and Platyrhincus and found that this is at best a secondary ID trait (If that) with wild fish and useless in aquacultured or captive raised fish.

The only guaranteed method to distinguish a Florida from a spotted, without killing it, is to know exactly where it came from. There really is no point to attempt distinguishing them without locality information.

what size tank do u have them in right now?
The Florida/Spotted or the Long nose?
The Florida/Spotted is in a 40gal breed by himself and the long nose are in a 10gal quarrantine tank.

I'll try to take a clear pix soon.

Are there any differences with the Florida and Spotted, regarding size, aggression, or anything else?

They are identical in most respects with only insignificant differences in size and behavior in captivity.

Thanks Polypterus, appreciate the info.

Thanks vinson lim. I really like the pattern on my florida/spotted.

I got rid of one of my Long nosed. Three I kept all eat pellets, two greedily and the third is getting the point that its food.

Here goes my Spotted Gar with one of his tank mates.
He is about 9.5" long (maybe a lil longer)
