how big of a tank would you need for one?

For what?? Red Tail I say 150gl comfortable as they swim way more aggressive than the Gars
You can find more info on the Reds under the "predatory fish" since this thread is for Gars :)

Here goes my Spotted Gar with one of his tank mates.
He is about 9.5" long (maybe a lil longer)

Nice spotted/florida West1. He is about and inch or two bigger than mine. How long have you had the two together and how do they get along?

I just got my Red 2 fridays ago. They get along perfect! The gar and the payara actually hang out together. The payara is quickly growing hate for my VATF'S as he chases them if they come close to him or sometimes to close to the gar.
By the way, I don't know myself if its a florida or spotted. When I bought it they said spotted, so I guess spotted :)

40gal breeder all by his lonesome. He was in a 20gal tall. Will eventually go in my 180gal, 240gal as soon as I can get one, or my 300gal (but looking to replace it with a larger wider tank).

Very nice. I want one but gonna wait until I can get a 3 or 4 foot wide tank.
