My GATF/TATF Growout Shoal Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah man, that will be awesome .... gonna be hard for the runt of them though, typically the smallest gets picked on with increasing brutality once they get comfortable .... hopefully having 5 and dithers does the trick ... keep us updated and good luck with them

This is going to be a very impressive looking shoal when bigger. Hope to see them all get along for the long haul.

+1 very impressive shoal. Good luck with them.

Thanks! I will definitely be keeping an eye on them as much as i can and update as much as i can.

You must feel like a new daddy. People always take a lot of pictures of the first born. LOL

In a way i do lol. My fish tanks are all setup at my work place. I have to come there at least once even when i'm not working to just sit and stare at them. I'm still amazed, 2 of the taft and 1 gatf is readily eating my prepared smelt. The taft seems to be more aggressive when it comes to eating, i notice them striking the food while the gatf just sits in the current and just wants until the food flows right infront of his mouth.

You are very lucky. It seems like you never even had to do any "training". They came pre-trained. lol If they're already eating non-live your work is done. Just do NOT give them live. At least for a few months. They will regress and fall off the wagon.

I like to give mine live once in awhile. Like once a year. It's just so fun to watch them attack prey since they such awesome hunters.

My tatf did not come from wes, but gatf did.
My gatf also just sits and waits on food to get right in front of him and then eats it and also mainly likes tiny pieces of food. My tatf seems more aggressive and will eat bigger pieces.

Yeah i feel like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders, and that sounds like a great idea. I think i might do that as well. A couple months from now when there established i might get a couple live and try to overfeed them with some hikari carnisticks before i feed them to the tigers. Definitely once a year or something.

Yeah your gatf looks nice. It looks exactly like mine. What are you feeding yours? Tilapia?

Day 13

Just wanted to give a quick update. After reading that feeding smelt comes with negative effects, I went to my local asian market and picked up a whole package of frozen raw anchovies. It has been a week since I switched to the anchovies. Some interesting observations is that there are two shoals in this tank. I thought that this would go away over time. Its interesting that the gatf all swim together near the mid-top of the tank away from the current while both taft and barbs all swim together directly in front of the powerheads. I feed two times a day and I feed them as much as I can in one feeding. There is still no aggression, and they are starting to get more comfortable. The gatf literally attack the food now. Gatf seem to go after the food while the taft sits in the current and waits for the food to come near it and then it strikes. There is one concern though, all the tigers readily eat except for one gatf. Theres one gatf that is skinnier than the rest. I believe he is not eating while the other two gatf consume the most food and are very fat.

I have a question about diet though, is anchovies the way to go in feeding them pre-prepped frozen food? Should I look into tilapia and market shrimp? Is there one that's better than the other nutrition wise? Another concern I have is that the coloration on the tails of the gatf are starting to get washed away and is no longer the bright red as the first week I got them. There is no substrate, I have black construction paper covering all three sides.
