My GATF/TATF Growout Shoal Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
GATF are very stubborn to break into non live food. If you have other fish already eating then it won't be long before he gets the idea. They can go for weeks without food. It took my GATF almost 2 weeks before he caved in. Tilapia is only filets and I doubt have all the trace minerals. I still think pellets are the best so you could stuff some pellets into the anchovies. I would throw in some softened pellets when you feed and see if they hit it.

Just a quick video update on my tigers. I switched to market shrimp and all goliaths as well as tanzaniae accept the food. They are starting to get used to being in the tank with no signs of aggression. They don't get startled as easy anymore and feeding time is pretty interesting now.

I know the tanks dirty but the last time i cleaned the tank, all my tigers changed color and there is no longer red on their tails... I use 100% RO water. Temperature is at 85F. 3/4 sides are blacked out, I even put black construction paper under the bottom. :headshake Anyway enjoy the video, play it in 1080p lol i used my iphone 4s so the quality horrible on anything under 1080

Awesome feeding vids! They seem to hit the food pretty quickly, I bet you could mix in some small sinking pellets when you throw the shrimp in there and they'd eat it as well. Might be worth a shot.

soo much current lol i love it. I agree on the pellets though /\

Yes! I have about 6500 gph on that side and in the videos, look at the 1in barbs, they swim right in front of it no problem. My girlfriend refers to the current as a "treadmill for fish".

I had no problem switching from smelt to anchovies to market shrimp, the tigers attack any white meat i throw in. Im going to start tossing in pellets with the shrimp and see how that goes.

Ill take some updated pictures later today. The goliaths have grown in mass, their scales have healed and now have a green mint glow on them.

Great set up. Just try to soften the pellets first. I would throw pellets first before the meat because after they eat dessert first they won't want vegetables later.

I cant believe it, i presoaked the hikari food for a couple minutes. I threw in about 5 broken sticks in with a couple pieces of shrimp. To my surprise, the smallest/slimmest gatf, the one who recently started eating the shrimp about 3 days ago ate about 3 sticks. The rest held it it in the mouths and either swallowed a little bit or spit it out. I will upload a close up video of them in a little bit.

How should i continue attempting to break them? Half shrimps half pellets or just starve them now and feed pellets only?

I would personally do 1/2 and 1/2, and then go 3/4 pellets and 1/4 shrimp a few days later. Then I'd go full pellets once they seem accustomed to eating them.

Once they are taking pellets with no issues, I'd rotate shrimp or fish filets in with the pellets every so often just for variety's sake.
