Rob coming in hard with a dose of knowledge, nice! Id love to see a pic of this new unclassified specie

I'd bet Max that it looks so much like a vittatus that not even I could tell it apart. I've had a suspicion for a long time that cf. "Haplogroup A" is the batch responsible for the incredible variety that we see in tanzaniae with colors. In other words, I think it's a three-scale-row VATF heavy duty model from the Congo. In other words, it's probably the 'true' big eye ATF, not tanzy. We see tanzys for sure, but I think these are in the hobby too. If I can prove this, I'd call it Hydrocynus megalops in honor of Wes' big eye moniker.

I can't prove this as of yet. Until I or someone else can prove that the yellow TATF are cf. "Haplogroup A" , they should continue to be referred to as TATF.

Guh. Makes me mourn my own tanzy even more thinking it could have been one of these guys. Great info though rob, if i come across anything fitting that description ill share pics

I wasn't insinuating that there was more than one kind of GATF, just noting the difference in appearance between their two individuals. I just find it interesting that they can look noticeably different in shape, knowing they're both the same species.

I'd say that solidly 1/2 of the tanzys on this site fit tha description. The problem is that we can't prove it. If for example I could get my hands on some of these exotic goonch morphs that we've all been discussing, I strongly suspect that I could prove my case. That's why I've been so bold as to make it.

I don't have the ability to do DNA testing on our ATF. Without any proof or any way to get proof, for the foreseeable future all ATF that look like a VATF but have three scale rows between the lateral line and the pelvic fin insertion must be considered tanzanaie. There's simply no proof to state otherwise. A hunch isn't enough.

Hell I can mail you a DNA sample of my tanzy lol. Maybe you can actually get it to someone who can do the tests at some point in time. You should start collecting dead ATF if you do plan on pursuing this! That would be awesome if you could prove that scientifically, MFK would have their own; ATF pioneer more so then they already do lol

Your welcome ;) lol if its a fish like ATF i never flush it for reasons like that. It can be useful in taxonomy of the specie. Im in no position to help get the testing done... yet at least haha I plan to go back to college next semester and go for whatever i would need to go reserach fish in the field. Ill be focusing on pretty much what you focus on Rob, big, barely known freshwater preds. These guys gotta be saved before humans kill em off, which we always inevitably do.

You can say what you will about the same species but I see what I see. People thought the world was flat at one time too. I'm not an Ichthyologist but my observations are telling me there is a pronounced difference between the fishes I've seen that are all classified as GATFs.
