My Greenie Meanie :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd stick with him, add some floating plants; it'll give him a little shade. If you persevere, high chance he will come out of his shell and become a brilliant wet pet

Thanks. What floating plants would you suggest?

That is sad and disappointing:/
My first thought is to suggest bold dithers to bring him out more, or maybe a companion?
He does look stressed, but appears to be healthy. I'm really not sure why your boy would be acting the way he is.

Tiger barbs be fine? Or do i look for something else for dithers? A female GT? He does have a female salvini around him all the time.

Sounds stressed.

Let's cover some basics:
Water temp? 28deg C [or was it 30? oops. shall get home and check]
Nitrate levels? [shall check] [Filtration is 3 canister filters]
High flow or low flow in the tank? [High flow. Flow directed back to front, slightly angled upwards]
What's the stock like? [GT, Salvini, 9 Clown loaches, 2 Yo-Yo loaches, 2 Royal Plecos, 1 Flash Pleco, 1 Butterfly Pleco, 1 Green Phantom Pleco,1 Clown Pleco and 1 Bristlenose Pleco [Plecos are all Juveniles except the Butterfly]
What is his diet like? [Hikari Sinking Cichlid Gold, JBL Cichlid sticks, Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets, Hikari Sinking wafers, Tropical Krill Chips]
Any flashing or poops that look off? [Flashin? Poop is usually red in colour like a hikari food stick]
Any signs of illness? [Not that i can see]
Where is the tank located? High traffic? [I guess. It's in a space between two rooms]
Picture of the full tank? [Posted above but shall get a new one tonight]

Big robust cichlids that spend all day in a cave just isn't right. My gt is at the glass 90% of the time watching us and or begging for food. [He does that when he wants food that's all]

love Green Terrors, nice specimen you have there

Thanks :)

Your definitely on the high side for temps, like the max. I would aim for 75-77 and see if that changes anything. Is the salvini being aggressive?

Flashing is when the fish flicks off of substrate wood or plants or the side of the tank. Like scratching himself. It's often a sign or irritation.

Dithers could work just make sure you don't add too many and create a situation where your nitrates will be out of control. Ensure the gt can't eat them. Also make sure to QT the new fish to ensure good health before adding them. I would suggest a wide body tetra or a giant danios. The together barbs could be nippy and are very frantic.

The higher temps could lead to lower oxygen levels, any heavy breathing?

Odd question but do you have anything red that is near his tank?

I'd add duckweed, it'll grow steadily even under medium light.

If you add a female GT, you may just see an entire character change; at the expense of other tank inhabitants.

I'd avoid tiger barbs, they'll get smashed. If any dithers, I always preferred giant danio's

I am from India and room temp is at 30 degrees during the day :) 75F would be like 25 deg Celsius. Might have to get cooling fans then.

Shall try leaving the heater [300W, 90G tank] at 26deg C and see if it helps.

Salvini is less than half the size of the GT and the GT bosses her around. But i do see a few trailers nipped. Shall get rid of the salvini this weekend during the water change.

No flashing.

No tiger barbs. check. shall look for other options.

Not really heavy breathing. But shall keep an eye out.

Red near his tank? Nope.

Duckweed becomes a mess. :( Flow rate is high so it goes all over the tank. Water lettuce perhaps? Or floating ludwigia?

Got your point about the female GT. Shall avoid.

No tiger barbs. Double check :)

Try to keep his tank under 26c I believe that is the conversion for under 80F, right? I've kept my pair at 82F and they are more aggressive then. Too cold, under 76 they seem very sluggish to me.

I don't know your tank size, it looks like a 75? If so I'd try the giant danios.
I have glotetras with mine and they ignore them. Except the orange one I had. My female killed her. She hates anything orange. But I think black skirt tetras would work well.

For floating plants you could use hornwart, the ludwigia you asked about or the lettuce, or even some pothos. The leaves would add top cover and the roots would give some hiding spots as well.

Tank is approx 93G or so. 50" [W] x 20" [D] x 21.5" [H].

Hope to get those plants soon. My LFS said he will let me know :)

After the periodic water change yesterday, set temp at 27degs only to realize that water room temp was 28-29degs! Ah well.

Changed lights from 6500k ones [Had them for my Dats] to 12k whites.

Added a bit more cover with wood so more space for him in the shade to move around

Seems happier now, but still not roaming around the tank like a wet pet.

Next step, dithers and floating plants.

Well i finally sold him back to my LFS. Was not planned. Had him bagged and was planning to drop him off at the pond in my Grandparent's house. Took him to the LFS to fill up oxygen.

He took one look and said he wants! :)

Such a beauty but too shy for my liking.

Now to sell off my plecos and get me a RD \m/
